South Carolina

In head coach Steve Spurrier’s best season at the helm of the Gamecocks, the cherry must be instituted on the sundae by winning the Battle of the Palmetto State this weekend against Clemson. SC has done it with a gnarly defense and two dynamic offensive athletes in WR Alshon Jeffery and frosh sensation RB Marcus Lattimore.

Throughout the season, the Gamecocks have been dominant at nothing, but respectable at everything, and it’s been enough to guide the team to eight wins in the SEC. It has been a down year for the SEC East division – Florida, Georgia and Tennessee have all been terrible at various times in 2010 – but it’s not to take away SC’s impressive showing.

Clemson would love to muddle that up, however. Though the Tigers have had a disappointing campaign, they always have the athletes and speed to turn a game around in a heartbeat. They have playmakers on both sides of the ball that you can’t give opportunities; SC must be very wary of that, especially with QB Stephen Garcia, who is prone to an interception or two. Still, SC has the horses to win this game on the road.

Clemson

Quarterback Kyle Parker is a dual-threat baseball/football aficionado that has shown his toughness and moxie. Sadly, Parker alone hasn’t been enough for the Orange and Purple this season. Parker is only a sophomore, and the Tigers also boast an effective running duo in Andre Ellington and Jamie Parker and dynamic defensive athletes like DB DeAndre McDaniel.

The 6-5 record is a little deceiving because Clemson has lost a cluster of heartbreaking games (16-13 vs. Florida State, 27-24 OT loss to Auburn, a 14-13 soul-stripper to NC State for just a few examples). Clemson could quite easily be in the position SC currently finds itself had a few bounces gone differently. There’s nothing productive to be taken from that attitude, though, and Clemson will doubtlessly be focused on ruining SC’s 2010 good cheer.

The Pick: The Tigers and Gamecocks pure, flat-out hate each other a la Ron Burgundy and Wes Mantooth, so the records are thrown out the window in such a game. SC tailback Lattimore is truly a load to contain, but Clemson has the players to disrupt Gamecock momentum and they will have the Howard’s Rock faithful behind them. The accumulated frustration from all the close defeats must be boiling over in Tiger-land, and I’ll call for Clemson to take this game in an upset.

South Carolina vs. Clemson Score Prediction: South Carolina 27 Clemson 30 (OT)
