Arkansas

The Hogs handled UTEP last week, but more impressive was two weeks ago, when they dispatched a South Carolina team that has turned out to be the best the SEC East has to offer. Arkansas is one of several highly competitive SEC West division squads; each team seems to have its calling card. In Fayetteville, it’s the passing game.

Quarterback Ryan Mallett looks more like an NFL signal-caller by the minute. After a 19-for-26, five TD performance against UTEP, Mallett now is just looking for a couple more swan songs against quality conference opponents to add to his buzz. His 2,967 yards and 24-8 ratio speak pretty loudly as it is.

The Razorbacks can score and they are good at keeping most opponents off the scoreboard. When they beat their opponents, Arkansas tends to really hand them a whuppin’. Although Auburn dropped 65 points on them earlier in the season, that’s really the only major blemish for the Hogs (in a game Mallett went down with injury). Without some injury concerns, Mallett would be well over the 3,000 yard mark. Add in a surprisingly strong season out of RB Knile Davis and the Hogs will beat anyone, any week.

Mississippi State

The Bulldogs lost by 20 to Alabama last week, and they may just now be coming back down to earth. MSU has had an excellent season in a very strong division and conference, but after giving up 24 points to UAB a few weeks ago and 30 to ’Bama last Saturday, it looks like opponents are starting to solve the Bulldogs’ spirited defense.

The running game is strong with a chunk of effective RBs and scrambling pivots, but MSU won’t get it done any other way. Often, a good running game and stout defense is enough in the SEC. But Mississippi State’s back seven will be tested like it seldom has this weekend under the yoke of Mallett and Co.

State should be focused on finishing strong and there’s a truly winnable game in the Egg Bowl at Ole Miss next week, but the Bulldogs will be in tough to finish the season with two consecutive wins.

The Pick: The Bulldogs will be able to move the ball on the ground and they should focus on keeping the ball out of Mallett’s hands. MSU has surprised other opponents this season and if they pull off a defensive effort for the ages, they could pull the upset. But Mallett and the rest of the Arkansas offense looks too multi-dimensional. Plus, if Arkansas continues to play defense like it has lately, it’ll all be academic.

Arkansas vs. Mississippi State Score Prediction: Arkansas 35 Mississippi State 24
