Utah

The Utes were humming along at highway speed until they met Texas Christian in a T-bone collision last week. TCU thrashed Utah 47-7 and a national TV audience witnessed who the contender and who the pretender was of the non-AQ teams. Many expected to see Utah come out with gusto at home (and after a 2009 drubbing at the hands of TCU also) yet it didn’t happen.

Utah can get redemption of a sort by beating the prestigious Irish on the road this Saturday. The only real challenge the Utes had on the slate before TCU was Pitt from the Big East, and the Panthers took Utah to overtime. Perhaps Utah is a bit overblown all together, but you couldn’t detect it from offensive and defensive performances through the season. Anyone on Utah can run the ball and until the TCU game, the defense had been stout too.

Notre Dame has proven it can pass, but that’s all. TCU pivot Andy Dalton made a mockery of the Utah D last week; the Utes must have a stronger showing this Saturday. If Utah’s defensive back seven can wake up, the Utes have the requisite tools needed to win this game and, in doing so, get back on track.

Notre Dame

The new era of head coach Brian Kelly hasn’t been all puppies and rainbows. The Irish are sub-.500 on the year and there has been grumbling surrounding the tragic death of Declan Sullivan, a 20-year old student that filmed Irish games/practices and fell off a scissors lift in gusting winds.

Licking its wounds after an embarrassing 35-17 loss to Navy a couple weeks ago, the Irish dropped a tough one to Tulsa last week. This is a reeling program that needs a positive right now; a win over one-loss Utah would certainly qualify.

If ND is going to do it, it must happen via the passing game. Quarterback Dayne Crist was productive before his season-ending knee injury. Veteran WR Michael Floyd is having another great year. Utah proved it is vulnerable through the air last week and Notre Dame has the personnel to exploit that, even with freshman pivot Tommy Rees under center. Offense (Re: the passing game) is Coach Kelly’s bread and butter. The Irish defense (other than LB Mante Te’o) is nothing to sell the farm over, however.

With another loss, the questions being lobbed at Kelly will doubtlessly continue. A lot will ride on how Utah responds from its recent drubbing and how Notre Dame responds from the tragic news of Sullivan.

The Pick: Utah is without question the better team top-to-bottom, but after the recent losses – both a fan and student’s mortality and on the field – if Kelly can’t get his troops playing inspired football this week at home, he isn’t worth all the hype he’s garnered in South Bend. Losing Crist for the year is a major blow and it is in keeping with Notre Dame’s recent misery. I’d like to pick the Irish, but starting a freshman QB in Rees will be a MAJOR CHALLENGE, the outlook could for a while could be murky for Kelly and Co.

Utah vs. Notre Dame Score Prediction: Utah 27 Notre Dame 24 (OT)

(Pick Change. Totally forgot about the Crist Injury — Sorry Ladies & Gents. My Bad)

Not sure who wrote your prediction for the ND v UTAH game this week, but I will be sure not to listen to it because the person who wrote it is clueless and ND qb Dayne Crist is done for the year with a knee injury, so not sure how he is going to pick apart the Utah D from the sideline.
