Ole Miss

The Rebs got somewhat even (and erased a string of three straight losses) last Saturday, beating Louisiana-Lafayette 43-21, but the defense still looked awful. They allowed 21 points to the Sun Belt’s UL-Lafayette and the unit ranks an even 100th in the country in points against (almost 33 per game!)

Ole Miss runs the ball effectively and has little trouble scoring points itself, but with the Swiss cheese D, it’s been hard to turn many satisfying results in the SEC. The duo in the backfield – QB Jeremiah Masoli and RB Brandon Bolden – can grind out yards and eat clock, but the Rebs’ penchant for giving up quick scores is proving very costly.

If there is any team in the conference ripe for the picking, it’s the rebuilding Vols. It is never a lot of fun to play in UT’s Rocky Top, but the Vols are a mess and there is an opportunity for Ole Miss to get to .500 on the season.

Tennessee

In the throes of UT’s lousy season, it at least trampled the in-state Memphis Tigers on the road last week. It is still little consolation beating a then 1-7 Tigers team and, with the win, moving the Vols’ record to   3-6.

There’s been a perfect storm of crap happening to Tennessee in the past ten months for a team and a fan base that is used to success. Between coaching shake-ups, headline controversy and recruit migration, the Vols have been through a lot. Still, the Sherbet and White could theoretically win out against Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Kentucky, which would be an admirable way to close out a forgettable 2010.

If it’s going to happen, the offense must seize the opportunity against the Rebs’ porous D.

The Pick: Ole Miss will break off some big gainers, but if Tennessee QBs Tyler Bray and Matt Simms can get the aerial assault going, points will be available and the Vols should feed off home momentum. This could go either way as UT is eminently beatable this season, but in Ole Miss’s case a soggy defense is not a formula for going into hostile road territory and coming away with a win.

Ole Miss vs. Tennessee Score Prediction: Ole Miss 24 Tennessee 31
