Western Michigan

WMU dropped a heartbreaker to conference front-runner Northern Illinois last week at home, 28-21. Lost in some tough losses this season is the fantastic season sophomore QB Alex Carder is having. He’s thrown for 2,300 yards and has 24 total TDs (six rushing).

His passing attack is fuelled by WRs Jordan White and Juan Nunez. White is closing in on 1,000 yards receiving and Nunez has 50+ receptions and six scores.

The Broncos have had two Achilles’ heels in 2010: they absolutely cannot run the ball (112th in the nation) and the defense can’t keep the opposition off the board. Their in-state rival this week has a strong attack in its own right, so the WMU defense probably needs to find some inner fire to get the job done on the road this week.

Central Michigan

Let’s be frank: things haven’t been the same in Mt. Pleasant since legend QB (a poor man’s Tim Tebow, essentially) Dan LeFevour graduated. The Chips have limped to a 2-7 mark and though the offense has been respectable as always, it’s rebuild mode at CMU.

Quarterback Ryan Radcliff has, like Carder, had a good season (2,342 yards) but an unimpressive 12-15 ratio. Central Michigan can run the ball with slightly more authority than this week’s visitors, and hopefully the Chippewas will be up for this in-state battle and finish the tail of the season out on a strong note.

The Pick: These teams ought to score the football early and often and there should be a whole bunch of passes attempted.

I like Western Michigan on the road, though, because the Broncos should have beaten Northern Illinois last week (who is 7-2 and unbeaten in MAC play, no less) and though these passing attacks are similar, Carder makes fewer mental errors than Radcliff.

Western Michigan vs. Central Michigan Score Prediction: Western Michigan 28 Central Michigan 14
