The Rutgers Scarlet Knights host the Tulane Green Wave in Week 5 college football action in Piscataway on Saturday afternoon. The teams met in a memorable game in New Orleans in 2012, with the Scarlet Knights taking that one by a score of 24-12.

The Green Wave haven’t enjoyed a good start to the season, and even endured some heartbreak in their conference opener which they dropped to Tulsa by a score of 38-31 in double overtime. Thus far, their only win comes against FCS opponent Southeastern Louisiana.

The Rutgers squad is surely in better spirits with a 3-1 record entering this contest. They did, however, drop their first game in the Big Ten, falling to Penn State by a score of 13-10. They made up for that a week ago when they upset Navy, 31-24.

For Tulane, quarterback Tanner Lee has gotten off to a really slow start, and has struggled over the last two weeks, completing fewer than half of his passes, getting picked off five times in those games. For the season, he has eight touchdowns and nine interceptions.

The team’s offensive concerns are evident, but the defense has been an even bigger concern. The unit is limiting opponents to a fair 414.8 yards per game, but opponents are making good use of those yards to score 35.8 points per game, the third-most allowed by an AAC team.

For Rutgers, quarterback Gary Nova has as many touchdowns as interceptions for the season with six of each. Even still, he’s completing 63.3 percent of his passes and has thrown for 906 yards on the season. He was efficient against Navy, completed 11-of-14 throws for 151 yards.

Wide receiver Leonte Caroo has been Nova’s top target, bringing in 18 balls for 335 yards and two scores.

FREE Tulane vs. Rutgers Pick:

Rutgers has certainly been the better team of the two this season and the talent gap between the two programs has only grown since their meeting in 2012, when the Knights won by 12 points, and that was at a neutral site.

[dfads params=’groups=63739&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

They’ll only need to do that again to cover the spread Saturday.

Additionally, neither defense has offered much to write home about, which could be just what the doctor ordered for a pair of offenses that would have liked to have been better through the first three games of the season, so there should be an increased focus on that side of the ball which will lead to points.

Rutgers is 5-1 ATS in its last six games overall, while Tulane is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall.

The over is 4-0 in Tulane’s last four games overall, and it is 11-5 in Tulane’s last 16 games against opponents with a winning record.
