Army

The Black Knights have had an impressive season, by their (not so lofty) standards. They are on the high side of .500 football and are slated to play Southern Methodist in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 30. A win against Navy in this historic game would certainly put a cap on it for Army and its fans.

Both academies use a similar formula to win games: running the ball. Army’s offense is funneled through QB Trent Steelman, a sophomore who has accounted for only 837 passing yards but also has 620 rushing yards and 11 rush TDs. What Steelman doesn’t do on the ground, second-year FB Jared Hassin represents: almost 900 yards and nine scores, with a healthy 5.6 per clip average. The proof is in the pudding as Army’s rushing attack ranks ninth in the country.

Army lost tough games against Hawaii and Rutgers, a couple different bounces and the Black Knights could’ve truly had an outstanding campaign.  Last season, the Knights made news for fielding a receiver, Ali Villaneueva, who graced the skies at 6”10, 285 lbs. It is a welcome change for Army to create buzz due to their on-field success.

Navy

Few teams field a more effective run game than Army, but the Middies are one of them. Navy’s fifth-ranked run game is reliant on veteran QB Ricky Dobbs, who has put up Steelman-like numbers, except Dobbs is also more prolific throwing the ball: he’s registered nearly 1,200 yards and 10 majors through the air to go with his 806 yards and 13 rushing TDs.

Navy has some eyebrow-raising wins on its 2010 slate, such as Notre Dame, Wake Forest and a 76-35 drubbing of East Carolina. This is a program that plays hard and, indeed, can give any team a competitive game. The Middies have an offense that can score – albeit in its own quirky way – effectively and a “D” that does enough to win games. Navy’s three losses this year to Maryland, Air Force and Duke were all narrow; the Midshipmen haven’t lost by more than a touchdown in 2010.

The boys from Annapolis are already set to play San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 23, yet the hallowed tradition of the Army-Navy game in Philly will be foremost on the minds of the players before bowl season can be officially kicked off.

The Pick

This season, Army fields its best team in quite a while. In fact, in the past 47 years only one other time in 1996 did both teams enter the match-up with winning records. All the same, the Black Knights have not won this game since 2001. This end-of-season tilt always represents a beacon of American tradition and pride, even if it doesn’t often represent the best football. As impressive as Army has been, the academy seems to play the same style of game as Navy, except not quite as skillful. Hence, the line of 7.5 looks good in a game where the Midshipmen ought to extend their eight-game win streak.

Army vs. Navy Score Prediction: Army 21 Navy 31
