SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Florida Gators

Coach: Urban Meyer
2009 Record: 13-1

Florida Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +600

The powerhouse Gators had two major off-season hurdles: firstly, the news and media buzz surrounding Coach Meyer’s chest pains and ill health; secondly, the graduation of perhaps the most celebrated college football player ever in QB Tim Tebow. Of course, this doesn’t take away from the fact that Florida has one of the most talented programs in the country.

Meyer is very effective at reloading the roster with gobs of super-talented athletic marvels.

Furthermore, in new pivot John Brantley, the Gators likely improved in the passing department.

Brantley won’t be as physical or versatile as Tebow, but he is a pure pocket passer with a strong arm. He has senior WR Carl Moore, dynamic junior Deonte Thompson and the super speedy duo of Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey to keep powering Meyer’s gimmicky schemes. It would be basically impossible to be as deep or talented as the incredible 2009 Gators, but this year’s team still shows tremendous promise by any other program’s measuring stick.

Team Strengths:

Team speed, team speed, team speed. Demps is one of the fastest young men in the game, Rainey has sub-4.4 speed and there’s quickness and speed all over the defense. Linebacker A.J. Jones can fly to the ball, CB Jelani Jenkins is legitimate and sophomore S Will Hill is blossoming into a pinball-like playmaker.

There is size and experience on the offensive line, highlighted by senior center Mike Pouncey (Pouncey’s twin brother, Maurkice, made the jump to the NFL). The only starting lineman who isn’t a junior or senior – soph Xavier Nixon – was the highest rated OL coming out of high school a couple years ago.

Hence, Brantley should have time in the pocket to operate.

Team Weaknesses:

Though the Gators’ speed is characteristically impressive, the D still lost a horde of stars to the NFL. Joe Haden, Brandon Spikes and Carlos Dunlap were among the best players in America at their respective positions. Underclassmen must step up and gather some slack left by the exodus.

For instance, Jenkins anchors the one cornerback spot, but freshman Joshua Shaw must work hard to ensure he isn’t constantly exploited on the other side.

2010-2011 Florida Football Prediction: 13-1

Hypothetically, the Gators can handle everyone on their schedule in 2010. UF plays the Alabama Crimson Tide in hostile Tuscaloosa on Oct. 2, which will be a tough game. LSU has taken a slight step back and the only game I envision Florida dropping is at Florida State in the final tilt of the regular season.

The Gators still probably have the best defense in the SEC and they will be vying for conference supremacy and probably the National Title as well.
