The Falcons closed out their season strong, dominating MAC opponents down the stretch en route to a MAC title, while Pittsburgh earned bowl eligibility by eking out a late season win against Syracuse.

Bowling Green will be happy to go back to Ford Field to play this game. The last time they were there, the team beat up on Northern Illinois 47-27 to claim the MAC title.

The team’s defense did a good job to hold off a strong Northern Illinois offense, but the real show was on the other side of the ball, namely a Bowling Green offense that churned out 574 yards. Quarterback Matt Johnson completed 21 of 27 passes for 393 yards and five touchdowns without an interception, adding 33 yards on the ground. Receivers Ronnie Moore and Alex Bayer each had big days, as Moore brought in four balls for 145 yards and a score, and Bayer had seven receptions for 124 yards and a score. Running back Travis Greene carried the ball 26 times for 133 yards and a score.

That game actually stood as the second smallest margin of victory for the Falcons in their final five games of the regular year as the team simply walked right through their MAC schedule. In their final five games, the Falcons outscored their five opponents by an average score of 44.6 to 8.8.

The team’s defense was sound all season, limiting opponents to just 14.8 points per game and ranking as the fifth best scoring defense in the country, and the eighth best unit in terms of total defense, surrendering just 308.7 points per game.

Pittsburgh’s regular season ended a little differently as they lost four of their final six games, although wins over Notre Dame and Syracuse allowed them to qualify for the postseason. The team will now play somewhere other than the BBVA Compass Bowl after ending their season there each of the last three seasons.

The Panthers’ season had both high and low points in their first year in the ACC with wins against Duke and Notre Dame, but the team finished 3-5 in conference play on the year. One of their bright spots came right in the center of their defense. The Panthers will bring one of the nation’s most lauded defensive players to the field in this one in defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who led the nation in tackles for a loss with 26.5.

It’s always interesting to see how teams from the MAC will be able to handle playing teams from superior conferences, but the Falcons are simply playing at a higher level than the Panthers are right now.

The Panthers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven bowl games.

The play: Bowling Green -4.5
