MAC Conference Football Previews: Eastern Michigan

Head Coach: Ron English
2009 Record: 0-12

Eastern Michigan Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

At least 2009 won’t be a tough act to follow. There’s nowhere to go but up for the Eastern Michigan Eagles, who didn’t win a game last season.

Will they be a nightmare again or find a way to win a handful of games and be an asset for bettors?

Team Strengths:

“Strength” is a relative term but you could argue the Eagles have strength or at least potential at both quarterback and halfback. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Alex Gillett only completed half his passes last year, largely because he got pressured so much, but he’s an athlete who can make plays with his feet and his arm is reasonably accurate. Senior running back Dwayne Priest scored seven touchdowns last year and isn’t easy to tackle, so he could have another decent campaign.

Not that Eastern Michigan’s “D” will be a positive overall, but Ron English should get the most out of guys like Javon Reese and Ryan Leonard on the defensive line thanks to his aggressive scheme.

Team Weaknesses:

Eek. These guys get lit up like a Christmas tree on defense. Last season, they allowed almost 40 points per game. Despite the aggressive new defensive approach, the secondary looks especially weak and incapable of making big plays. A supposed “go-to” cornerback like Arrington Hicks didn’t even intercept a pass in 2009.

Eastern Michigan’s offensive line doesn’t do Gillett or Priest and favors and their receiving corps lacks a guy with game-changing speed.

Did I mention the Eagles also lost their top tackler from a year ago in linebacker Andre Hatchett?

Eastern Michigan 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 7-5

I’ll assume the Eagles’ more secure quarterbacking situation and pass rushing ability will net them that elusive victory this year, but this team will still struggle to compete in the MAC.

As shaky as the offense looks, it’s Eastern Michigan’s defense that looks to be its undoing again. English is working to improve the group but that won’t happen overnight.
