CFB Football Previews – Boston College Eagles vs Virginia Tech Hokies

Here comes Virginia Tech. After a humbling 23-3 loss to Clemson on October 1, their only defeat of the year, the Hokies have rattled off consecutive convincing wins over Miami and Wake Forest.

With the ACC crown and perhaps the national title still on their minds, is there any chance they get caught looking past the disappointing Boston College this week?

Boston College Eagles (1-5)

Sure, it was possible that Boston College was overhyped entering the 2011 season. Its FBS-leading run defense from a year ago would be tough to duplicate and its offense lacked playmakers aside from Montel Harris. However, even if you picked BC as a bust pick, did you expect the Eagles to be this bad? 1-5 bad? I didn’t.

Boston College can’t do anything right this season. Its offense isn’t even a top-100 unit and has failed to score 20 points in all five losses. That Harris is now out for the season after re-injuring his knee two weeks ago versus Clemson only adds to the team’s woes. The Eagles’ run defense has slipped from first to 68th and it ranks 96th in the nation in total defense.

(16) Virginia Tech Hokies (6-1)

Maybe Virginia Tech will look back on the Clemson loss and thank the Tigers. It seems the team has woken up and finally started looking legit against reasonably tough opponents over its last two games. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The big difference: Logan Thomas. The new starting quarterback and successor to Tyrod Taylor looked shaky over his first few games but has settled in nicely. He threw for 310 yards and three scores against Miami’s athletic, fast defense and added 280 yards and two scores against Wake Forest.

He was picked off zero times over those two wins. Playing a Cam-Newton type of roll, the 6’6”, 254-pound Thomas also has four rushing touchdowns in his last two contests.

He’s a battering ram.

The pick:

Now that Thomas has hit his stride, the Hokies should have a pretty easy time with BC. I even think they can cover the 21 points. Not only is Virginia Tech’s suddenly dangerous offense a major threat to BC’s pushover “D,” Chase Rettig and the Eagles offense have little to no chance against a stout Hokies “D” on the road.
