These two teams are eerily close in the FBS team rankings for offense and defense; the differences lying in the fact that the Bruins got kicked around in their Pac-10 conference schedule while Temple had many fewer blemishes with its cream-puff MAC version.

Both of these teams can, and likely will play some assertive defense, with bright spots being UCLA’s DT Brian Price, LB Reggie Carter and DB Alterraun Verner (great name), and Temple’s Adrian Robinson.
In the only truly daunting match-up on the Owls’ 2009 sked, they got rolled by Penn State 31-6. Conversely, in Westwood the hope was that Rick Neuheisel’s team was on the rise and almost able to run with cross-town rival USC. Though Southern Cal had a miserable season, the Bruins also proved there’s still plenty of work to do.
The UCLA offense is lacklustre; freshman tailback Johnathan Franklin and speedy wideout Terrence Austin will have to make plays if this game is to be high-scoring.
Though the records suggest Temple should have the advantage, the conference disparity (don’t forget that the Pac-10 had several uncharacteristically strong teams in ’09) and the recruiting hauls translate to UCLA being quite a bit more talented.
Yes, upsets have become commonplace in college ball lately, but if UCLA creates a little offense and its defense stymies Temple like it ought to, the Bruins should come away with a W in the nation’s capital.
