Preview:

The 2009 Cotton Bowl features two teams that had massive expectations heaped on them at the start of the season. They both disappointed somewhat as it played out, for various reasons. The point being, that when these teams are dialed in, they can both play some remarkable football.

For the Rebs, QB Jevan Snead hasn’t been quite as spectacular as advertised. However, all-purpose weapon Dexter McCluster is a real treat to watch, and likely not a treat to tackle. When McCluster has a huge game, Ole Miss plays well and the results are positive. The Ole Miss defense is also adept at the big play; the Rebs rank in the Top 20 in the nation in sacks and tackles for loss.

Oklahoma State hit a major roadblock when star WR Dez Bryant failed to qualify academically. With Bryant, the Cowboys attack was one of the most potent in America. Pivot Zac Robinson, Bryant and RB Keith Toston made up a triumphant triumvirate. Without Bryant, Robinson and Toston have had to shoulder the load, though the defense has been better than projected.

Oklahoma State also must rebound from an embarrassing 27-0 loss to the in-state rival Sooners to close out the season.

The Cowboys will probably have a tough time containing McCluster and without Bryant, their offense just doesn’t have that extra dimension.

If Snead can put together a strong performance to complement McCluster’s elusiveness, look for the Rebels to take this one in the $1.2 billion airplane hangar they call Cowboys Stadium.
