Big East Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Connecticut Huskies

Coach: Randy Edsall
2009 Record: 8-5

Connecticut Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

In recent years, UConn has been in the bowl picture. The past two seasons, in fact, the Huskies were victorious against Buffalo and South Carolina in the International Bowl and the PapaJohns.com Bowl, respectively.

Coach Randy Edsall has been able to piece together a few recruits from the loaded Pennsylvania/tri-state area and field some competitive Big East teams. The Huskies have been improving steadily, and contending in the Big East this year could be dependent on how broad a step QB Zach Frazer makes as a senior.

Edsall has done a great job holding the clipboard for the Huskies, and he may produce greater still with a talented squad and a dash of momentum.

Team Strengths:

Quarterback could potentially be a strength for this team. Frazer was a hyped prospect that originally signed with Notre Dame, but never endeared himself to the Golden Domers after Jimmy Clausen solidified the starting job. Frazer transferred to UConn and he hasn’t shown anything profound yet.

He has undeniable size (6”4, 236 lbs) and talent and he is in the second year of a new offensive scheme. Now is the time for Frazer to show he can lead the Huskies and assert himself as an NFL prospect.

In other news, the Huskies’ offensive line is excellent, anchored by senior guard Zach Hurd and junior center Moe Petrus. The running game will flourish with junior Jordan Todman (1,188 yards and 14 TDs last year) and the dominant mauling front. Old-school linebackers Scott Lutrus and Lawrence Wilson lead the defense.

Team Weaknesses:

The receiver corps has experience, but no players who have proven to be serious playmakers. Top wide-out Marcus Easley has graduated, so someone out of Michael Smith, Isiah Moore and jitterbug Kashif Moore must step up. The secondary also loses some serious players in 2010, so it too is an area of weaknesses.

As good a name as Blidi Wreh-Wilson is, he must make some more plays at corner as a sophomore.

2010-2011 Connecticut Football Prediction: 9-4

The Huskies have talent and production returning, but there are also a lot of other strong “Johnny-come-lately” programs in the conference. Keys to UConn’s season will be the further progression of Frazer and how well the secondary shores up.

The Huskies play an intriguing game the first week of the season versus Michigan at the Big House.

The final two weeks of the campaign – Cincinnati in Storrs and at South Florida – will also be vital.
