ACC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Clemson Tigers

Coach: Dabo Swinney
2009 Record: 9-5

Clemson Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +7500

Clemson has been one of those enigmatic programs that has always had pockets of NFL-caliber talent but has been unable to take the step toward the FBS’ major players. In fact, the Tigers haven’t won an ACC title since 1991.

Former coach Tommy Bowden, who had the reins for ten years, was unable to get the job done, but thus far Coach Swinney has done a good job of nabbing some top prospects in the hotbeds of Georgia and Florida.

The 2010 squad that will touch Howard’s Rock has several dangerous players that are destined for the pros, but must replace some key skill position guys and has worries about certain distractions and a deep conference. The Clemson faithful go bananas when the home side touches Howard’s Rock, but will they ever touch a championship trophy?

Team Strengths:

The Tigers roll out a couple players on defense that can take over a game. Defensive end Da’Quan Bowers was a hype recruit and he should take a major stride in his junior season.

Safety DeAndre McDaniel is likely the best in the country at his position, registering a ridiculous 102 tackles and eight INTs in ’09. Linebacker Brandon Maye and DT Jarvis Jenkins are also cogs.

Quarterback Kyle Parker played great as a freshman last season, but he is also a stud baseball player, recently being drafted by the Colorado Rockies. As contract negotiations have recently broken down in Denver, Parker has decided to return to Clemson to play QB, but will he be free of distractions?

At least he has a fantastic O-line protecting him; tackles Chris Hairston and Landon Walker lead the way.

Team Weaknesses:

Clemson loses its two offensive game-breakers in RB C.J. Spiller and WR Jacoby Ford. These were the two fastest players on an athletic team and hence, the Tigers will lean on youth to fill the void. Lanky freshman Martavis Bryant and redshirt freshman Bryce McNeal must both show they are for real.

In the defensive secondary, McDaniel can cover up enough mistakes, but Clemson still needs more playmaking production from the cornerback position.

2010-2011 Clemson Football Prediction: 10-4

The Tigers must travel to Auburn, North Carolina and Florida State in 2010 – these are all statement games for a team with an identity crisis. Is Clemson a major program that can make BCS rumblings, or are they merely middle-of-the-pack ACC fodder?

Young players emerging on offense, Parker staying focused and McDaniel snagging another eight picks all would support the former.
