Big East Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Cincinnati Bearcats

Coach: Butch Jones
2009 Record: 12-1

Cincinnati Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Bearcats fans and players alike were dejected when, at the end of their magical unbeaten season, head coach Brian Kelly bailed to greener pastures at Notre Dame. He left before Cincy’s bowl game, and the Bearcats accordingly got waxed by Florida, 51-24.

Yet it doesn’t change the fact that Cincy ran the table in the regular season, including a thrilling 45-44 victory over conference rival Pittsburgh.

Starting pivot Tony Pike graduated and the absence of Kelly will be notable, but Cincinnati went back to the Central Michigan coaching well again by bringing in Jones (he replaced Kelly at CM when Kelly first left for Cincinnati).

Jones is capable and he has enough talent to work with, but expectations are surely high in southern Ohio after such a great 2009 campaign.

Team Strengths:

The Bearcats will feature a potent offense driven by the wide receivers and the fleet-footedness in the backfield. Quarterback Zach Collaros filled in for Pike last season when he was injured quite admirably; he finished with nearly 1,500 yards and a great 10-2 ratio. He is also very adept at scrambling. He has veterans Armon Binns and D.J.

Woods to throw to, as well as senior Vidal Hazleton, a former USC Trojan who could be special if the light ever turns on. Tight end Ben Guidugli is yet another option for Collaros.

Cincy’s offensive line is also a strength, anchored by veteran guards Jason Kelce and Alex Hoffman. On defense, DT Derek Wolfe is a player and LB J.K. Schaffer was the second-leading tackler in ’09.

Team Weaknesses:

Though Collaros played phenomenally stepping in last year, it will be a pleasant surprise if he plays that well all season. Cincy fans will probably miss Pike at some point. There is attrition on the D, notably all-conference LB Andre Revels (led team with 109 tackles) and all-conference FS Aaron Webster.

The ’Cats break in a new punter in Patrick O’Donnell and three of four on the defensive line are new faces.

2010-2011 Cincinnati Football Prediction: 9-4

The upstart Bearcats probably have the best offense in the Big East, especially if Collaros continues his smooth execution. Coach Jones is no slouch, as he led Central Michigan to back-to-back MAC title games and he should get the talent to respond – particularly the veterans that remember the Coach Kelly heartbreak and the Gators thumping.

It will be a strong season in Cincinnati, but little could compare to last year’s run.
