CFB Matchup Tips: Handicapping 2015 Big 12 Football Games

2015-16 Early-Season College Football Matchups – (Big 12)

The TCU Horned Frogs are entering the 2015-16 NCAA Football Season as a National Championship favorite. The current coaches poll has them at No. 2 in the country behind the Ohio State Buckeyes, but you have to ask yourself if they’re just a tad overrated at this point in the process.

Big 12 Preview

According to Bovada, TCU is currently slotted with the second-best odds to win a national title (+1000), and while Week 1 won’t define their season one way or the other, it’s important that they get off to a hot start.

That’s where we begin, with TCU taking on Minnesota.

TCU Horned Frogs @ Minnesota Golden Gophers

Date: Thursday, Sept. 3
Time: 9:00 p.m. ET
Venue: TCF Bank Stadium
Odds: TBD

Last season, the Horned Frogs took down the Minnesota Golden Gophers in dominant fashion. They defeated the Big Ten foe 30-7, but this time it will have to travel to Minnesota.

Although a win is important here, a victory won’t really tell us much about this squad’s title chances this season. The bigger story will be if they drop an early-season matchup on the road as a heavy favorite, making this contest crucial in its own right.

Texas Longhorns @ Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Date: Saturday, Sept. 5
Time: 7:30 p.m. ET
Venue: Notre Dame Stadium
Odds: TBD

Although Texas and Notre Dame have lost some of their sex appeal over the years, these are still two of the winningest programs in college football history, which means all eyes should be on them when they face off in Week 1.

Last season, Notre Dame went 8-5 while Texas went 6-7. This will be just the 11th time these two teams have gone head to head.

Oklahoma Sooners @ Tennessee Volunteers

Date: Saturday, Sept. 12
Time: 6:00 p.m. ET
Venue: Neyland Stadium
Odds: TBD

The Oklahoma Sooners have faced off against the Tennessee Volunteers just three times during its program history. That said, they will face Tennessee during the 2015-16 season for the second time in as many years.

Last season, Oklahoma took down Tennessee 34-10 on the road in Week 3. This year’s Week 2 matchup should be closer, and truth be told, last year’s contest was closer than the final 24-point margin seems to indicate.

Iowa State Cyclones vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

Date: Saturday, Sept. 12
Time: 4:30 p.m. ET
Venue: Jack Trice Stadium
Odds: TBD

An Iowa Hawkeyes versus Iowa State Cyclones early-season matchup won’t move the needle much for fans on a national scale, but this is a heated in-state rivalry between non-conference opponents that deserves our attention.

Last season, the Cyclones went just 2-10, while the rivaled Hawkeyes put together a 7-6 record. This has traditionally been a high-scoring, close affair, so expect the same this season despite the disparity in records from a year ago.

Georgia Southern Eagles vs. West Virginia Mountaineers

Date: Saturday, Sept. 5
Time: 7:30 p.m. PT
Venue: Milan Puskar Stadium
Odds: TBD

In case none of the other Big 12 matchups got you excited about the upcoming season, here’s one you can’t miss: Georgia Southern versus West Virginia!

In case you missed the sarcasm there, this not-so-exciting matchup epitomizes what non-conference scheduling is this season for the Big 12. Yes, this is one of the top early-season matchups because of Georgia Southern’s ability to run the football, but it won’t be more than a blip on the radar for the national audience.
