2011-2012 Football Previews – MAC Conference – Central Michigan Chippewas

The Central Michigan Chippewas have lost some pretty good players and coaches over the last few years. Dan LeFevour set all kinds of school records at the quarterback position.

Both Brian Kelly and Butch Jones left the school to coach at Cincinnati. Dan Enos was left with a less than stellar roster in 2010. The Chippewas went 3-9 largely because of their issues with turning over the football. Central Michigan turned the ball over 29 times, and they were 112th out of 120 teams in college football in turnover margin.

There are some pretty good pieces in place to help build the program up once again. If the team can start to play solid fundamental football once again, the Chippewas have a chance to jump in the standings.

Team Strengths:

Ryan Radcliff has all the tools to be a very good quarterback, and he really started to show that at the end of last season. He threw for 3,358 yards as a sophomore in 2010. Radcliff also threw 17 interceptions, but I expect him to mature and improve his decision making.

Don’t be surprised if Radcliff becomes one of the best players in the MAC in the next couple years.

Central Michigan should have one of the best secondary’s in the MAC. Jahleel Addae is a 5’9 safety who can absolutely fly, and he will cover more ground than any other safety in the conference. Everyone in this secondary has great speed, which means they should be able to take some extra chances and still recover with their top end speed.

The Chippewas offensive line should be an area of strength this year as long as they can stay healthy. Last year the team suffered through a multitude of injuries across the line.

Most of these linemen are veterans and they work well together.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive line was beaten off the line of scrimmage consistently last year. Central Michigan ranked 80th in the nation in sacks and 81st in tackles for loss.

There are no signs that things will be much better on the defensive line this year.

This unit must improve or the defense will struggle against the best offensive lines in the conference. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Central Michigan must replace its top two linebackers from a year ago. With the front line of the defense being quite weak, the Chippewas really need a couple guys to step up in this unit. Expect some growing pains in the front seven overall for Central Michigan.

The lack of a running game really hurt Central Michigan in 2010. When they played Division One opponents, the Chippewas rushed for over 100 yards only three times last year.

Radcliff and the passing game are solid, but it is hard to be successful without some balance on the offensive side.

2011-2012 Central Michigan Football Prediction: 6-6

The first half of the schedule is extremely difficult for Central Michigan. The Chippewas travel to Kentucky, NC State, and Michigan State. Expect a slow start to the season for this team as they battle tough teams and work in some inexperienced players on the front seven defensively.

At the end of the season, Central Michigan has a favorable schedule. I expect Radcliff and the offense to be clicking pretty well by that time.

Look for Central Michigan to start slow and finish fast this year.
