Pac 10 Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: California Golden Bears

Coach: Jeff Tedford
2009 Record: 8-5

California Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Though generally a step behind Southern Cal, in the last decade Tedford’s Golden Bears teams have always held their own and usually have been a thorn in the side of the Trojans.

Tedford’s work with senior QB Kevin Riley and an extremely experienced offense will have Cal near the top of the Pac-10 this season. USC has hit stormy waters and Oregon lost stud pivot Jeremiah Masoli, so the conference could truly be up for grabs this time.

The Bears need continued efficiency from Riley and a plucky linebacker corps to lead the defense in order to have a hope at sniffing Roses.

Team Strengths:

Riley, who threw for nearly 3,000 yards and an 18-8 ratio in 2009, has a well-adjusted offense to utilize. Dynamic running back Jahvid Best is off to the NFL, but his replacement Shane Vereen actually had more yardage than the banged-up Best last season.

Vereen is a talent. A wise O-line will buttress success, with junior Mitchell Schwartz and senior Chris Guarnero among the Pac-10’s best.

Linebacker Mike Mohamed did everything last year, with 112 tackles, two sacks and three INTs to lead the defense. He is back for his senior season and should rip things up with fellow veteran inside ’backers D.J. Holt and Mychal Kendricks.

Punter Bryan Anger is one of the best in America.

Team Weaknesses:

There is heavy attrition in the secondary, punctuated by true freshman Keenan Allen likely starting at safety. Cal’s secondary didn’t perform so well in 2009 and it’s possible something similar happens this year.

There is experience at the wide receiver spots, but not a whole heck-load of talent; Riley must be accurate for a well-oiled aerial attack.

2010-2011 California Football Prediction: 10-3

The door is open for one of several talented yet well-matched Pac-10 teams to step to the big table in 2010. The Golden Bears could certainly be that team.

They have a senior quarterback who should have his best season and has nice depth behind him in case of an injury; the defensive shortcomings should be shrouded behind a tenacious LB unit; and junior RB Vereen is a sparkplug.

Cal will have a better season this time around, and if it catches some breaks it might just be vying for the conference crown.
