Wisconsin’s rushing attack has been gaining plenty of national headlines with their strong play. Even the Green Bay Packers were seen stealing the Badgers’ running backs’ touchdown celebration. Most recently, Wisconsin beat Iowa, 28-9.

The Wisconsin rushing attack stole the show against the Hawkeyes. The team ran the ball 45 times, turning those carries into 218 yards and a pair of scores. Running back James White did the bulk of the work, turning 19 carries into 132 yards and both scores. Fellow running back Melvin Gordon had a poor day in comparison, running 17 times for 62 yards. Quarterback Joel Stave wasn’t called upon often, but when he was he completed 11 of 19 throws for 144 yards and two scores with an interception. Jared Abbrederis was of course his favorite target, but only caught three balls for 30 yards and a touchdown because he left early with a rib injury. That injury isn’t expected to keep him out against BYU.

The team’s defense actually gave up the first two scores of the game, both field goals, allowing Iowa to drive deep into Wisconsin territory, but coming up big when it really mattered, holding the Hawkeyes to short field goals.

BYU’s last game was a win over Boise State, 37-20. That one came under the lights in a Friday night showdown. The team leaned heavily on quarterback Taysom Hill in that game, and he responded with a huge performance. Hill completed 27 of 41 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns, adding 69 rushing yards and an additional score on the ground. Among Hill’s tosses was a 40-yard touchdown strike to Mitch Mathews. The Cougars also churned out 229 yards on the ground, with Jamaal Williams leading the way, rushing 21 times for 107 yards.

The BYU defense had more trouble with a banged up Boise State offense than the score indicates. Backup quarterback Grant Hedrick completed 25 of 42 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown with an interception. Running back Jay Ajayi’s success is more concerning considering this weekend’s opponent. Ajayi rushed 23 times for 151 yards against the Cougars.

Both teams make headlines with their defensive play, but both teams quietly have been very good offensively of late. Don’t be surprised if this game finishes with more points than expected on the scoreboard when all is said and done.

The over is 15-6 in Wisconsin’s last 21 games played in the month of November.
