Coach: Bronco Mendenhall
2008 Record: 10-3

The Mountain West conference is routinely the best mid-major, and Brigham Young is often the class of the conference.

The Cougars have seen some excellent quarterbacks over the years such as Jim McMahon, Ty Detmer and John Beck; the latest edition to that list is senior Max Hall, who should have a productive swan song 2009. How BYU fills some absences elsewhere, though, will determine just how strong they finish in Provo. Hall loses a productive target in Austin Collie to the NFL, but still has other solid options in highly-touted McKay Jacobson and Dennis Pitta, who is one of the best TEs in the nation. Stocky (6”0, 240) tailback Harvey Unga can move the pile and BYU hopes the offense will be held together by a green, if talented, O-line.

The defense should be improved with plenty of experience in the front seven. Jan Jorgensen and Matt Bauman stand out.

Team Strengths
BYU has four of the top six linebackers returning, headed by Bauman and Shawn Doman. End Brett Denney and Jorgensen, the MWC’s career sack leader, should pressure opposing quarterbacks.

As mentioned, though Max Hall is little (6”1, 200) he is an all-timer for this program.

Team Weaknesses
Sophomore tackle Matt Reynolds is the only returning starter on the offensive line. The receivers are less experienced, new faces pop up in the secondary and the Cougars must replace departing C.J. Santiago with dinky sophomore punter Tyler Holt.

The Cougars are again the best team in the MWC, no small compliment when TCU and Utah are in the conference. BYU has beaten up on B-list major conference teams like UCLA in the past, but they will be tested by the likes of Oklahoma and Florida State this time around.

BYU also gets to host TCU and Utah. With a couple of upsets, the Cougars could be 2009’s version of Utah.

2009 Brigham Young Cougars Record Prediction: 11-2
