2011-2012 Football Previews – MAC Conference – Buffalo Bulls

Jeff Quinn came into Buffalo expecting to make this team into an offensive power, but the plan fell flat in his first year. Quinn’s Bulls finished dead last in scoring offense last year, as the Bulls averaged just 14.17 points per game.

The Bulls run up to center and tried to push the tempo of the game, but that is extremely difficult to do when you simply aren’t getting first downs. The idea is to run an Oregon or Oklahoma style of offense, but right now Buffalo simply doesn’t have the talent to be successful in that offense.

This is a team that was playing from behind all year long. Buffalo managed to score just six first quarter points all year in 2010.

Team Strengths:

The Bulls have a terrific group of wide receivers. Marcus Rivers is the most accomplished of the receivers, but Terrrell Jackson and Alex Neutz are likely to make significant contributions this season as well. If Buffalo can have a quarterback who can consistently get these guys the ball, they will likely be much improved on offense.

The linebackers are the clear strength of the defense. Khalil Mack may only be a sophomore, but he has already proven himself to be the leader of this defense. Mack is an NFL type of player that gets into the backfield often. Jaleel Verser is also a physical linebacker who does everything he is asked to do.

This group of linebackers may be the best in the conference.

The defensive line should be solid with Steven Means leading the way on the front. Means is a talented defensive end that does a good job against both the run and the pass.

In the middle it is Richie Smith, who does a nice job clogging the running lanes.

Team Weaknesses:

Can the Bulls find an effective quarterback to run this spread offense? Quinn wants the team to push the tempo, but they must get some first downs and take better care of the football. Jerry Davis is likely to get the job, but he must improve his decision making. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Buffalo absolutely has to find some sort of a running game. The Bulls didn’t have a single player rush for 100 yards in any game last year. In fact, Buffalo’s leading rusher for the season didn’t even net 300 yards last year.

It will be next to impossible for this team to employ their hurry up offense if the defense doesn’t even have to respect the running game.

The Buffalo secondary is a big concern in 2011. Every starter from last year’s secondary is gone, and the Bulls are forced to start anew. There is some talent at the safety spot, but the cornerback position is a big question mark.

Since Buffalo rarely pressures the quarterback, the secondary is liable to get beat early and often this season.

2011-2012 Buffalo Football Prediction: 3-9

Buffalo needs to keep it together through adversity this year, because they are unlikely to win many games through the first half of the season.

The Bulls best chances of winning come at the end of the year with games against Eastern Michigan, Akron, and Bowling Green. If the offensive line can stay healthy this year, the offense will likely be a bit better. My concern is that the secondary will get beat consistently, and this Buffalo offense won’t be able to outscore too many teams.

Expect another long year for the Bulls.
