I often talk about how unbalanced offenses usually struggle, but the Bowling Green Falcons were the epitome of a team without any balance last year. Bowling Green ranked dead last in rushing yards, and it wasn’t even close.

The Falcons averaged 63 yards per game on the ground, and the second worst team in the nation averaged 79 per game. Bowling Green could move the ball through the air, but eventually the defenses starting realizing this team couldn’t run.

Dave Clawson brought in one of the best recruiting classes in the MAC, and the Falcons have a ton of youngsters on their roster. While this isn’t a team that appears ready to make a big jump, watch out for Bowling Green to be much improved in a year or two.

Team Strengths:

While his statistics from last year don’t really show it, Matt Schilz has all the tools to be a very good quarterback for Bowling Green. Clawson runs the spread offense and Schilz did a good job getting accustomed to that offense in his freshman year last season. Schilz dealt with some pretty significant injuries last year as well.

A healthier Schilz will likely mean a jump in production at the quarterback spot. Schilz has a great receiver to hook up with in Kamar Jorden. Jorden caught 96 passes a year ago, and the staff is expecting another huge season from him.

The secondary returns all four starters from last year. Ryland Ward looks ready to breakout and have a big season. The safeties do a nice job keeping the ball in front of them.

This unit should be the strength of the defense.

Team Weaknesses:

The fact that Bowling Green managed to average just 63 yards tells me that the single biggest weakness on this team is their inability to run the football. The Falcons return just one tailback with much experience at all, and it isn’t clear who will get most of the carries for this team. If Bowling Green is going to improve, the running game must become a factor.

The Bowling Green defense against the run is a real problem as well. Bowling Green allowed five teams to run for more than 200 yards in 2010. The Michigan Wolverines rolled up a ridiculous 466 yards on the ground against Bowling Green. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Overall, the Bowling Green defense allowed 33.6 points per game, and they held just one opponent below 20 points.

Bowling Green’s defense has had trouble stopping the opposition, but they also aren’t opportunistic at all. The Falcons picked off just 12 passes last year, and they only had 17 sacks. Bowling Green lost a couple of their top defensive linemen from a year ago, and they’ll need someone to step up and cause some problems in the opposing teams backfield.

2011-2012 Bowling Green Football Prediction: 3-9

Bowling Green is a team that has a much brighter future ahead, but that might not show on the field too much in 2011. The Falcons have winnable games at home against Morgan State and Wyoming in week two and three, but they have a very difficult conference schedule. There might not be a game in the MAC schedule where Bowling Green is favored.

I think Schilz will help this team progress some in 2011, but the losses will likely still pile up due to a poor defense and the lack of a running threat.
