Bowling Green Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

After being a bowl team for two straight seasons, the Bowling Green Falcons have a very foggy forecast for 2010. They’ve retained some key pieces but they’ve lost a ton of high-impact players from their 2009 roster. Will they reload quickly or crash and burn?

The running game really let the team down in 2009, as did the offensive line. The defense was actually the stronger unit last year for Bowling Green, but they lose six starters so there will be a lot of new faces on that side of the football.

Team Strengths:

Supposedly, Bowling Green will become a run-first team in 2010 after losing its top quarterback and receiver. But is running the football really a “strength” for Bowling Green simply because it has several returning players at tailback? [soliloquy id=”82219″]

With respect to guys like Willie Geter, who should get the lion’s share of the carries, Bowling Green averaged only 86.5 rushing yards per game last year. That number was 114th in the nation and needs to climb this year.

Defensively, the D-line could be a strength in 2010. It struggled last year but is high on experience now. Angelo Magnone and Darius Smith should be the leaders.

Team Weaknesses:

Call me crazy, but I see more weaknesses than strengths for Bowling Green at the moment. Quarterback Tyler Sheehan is gone, as is his top target, Freddie Barnes. Barnes was ridiculous last year, leading the country with 155 catches and scoring 19 times. He’s simply irreplaceable.

The Falcons have to rebuild their passing game and the starting quarterback picture is muddy at best. During spring drills, Aaron Pankratz, Matt Schilz, Kellen Pagel and Caleb Watkins all shared snaps equally. The most recent reports from Bowling Green suggest Dave Clawson still hasn’t picked a starting pivot; bettors should check back daily as the Falcons have to name a starter any day now.

Defensively, Bowling Green has reason to worry as well. All three linebackers and three of their four starting defensive backs are gone. Even on special teams, the Falcons’ primary kicker, punter, kick returner and punt returner have left town.

Bowling Green 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 4-8

Is there a team in the nation who lost more important player personnel that Bowling Green this offseason? To call 2010 a reloading season is an understatement.

I can’t possibly imagine the Falcons getting back to a bowl game this year – especially since they play five of their first seven games on the road.
