Boise State

For the Broncos, this game is going to be all about one matchup: The Broncos’ pass defense versus the Beavers’ pass offense.

On the year, Oregon State is third in the country in passing yards per contest. Their rushing attack has been anemic at best, tallying just 86 yards per game (118th in the FBS), while their passing game has led to 34.5 points per outing.

The Broncos need to do two things: Lock down Brandin Cooks and put pressure on Sean Mannion. Their defense is allowing 248.4 yards per game through the air, which is only good enough for 93rd in the nation.

Historically speaking, Boise State has shown up over and over again against the Pac-12. If it wants to keep that going this season, it must control the clock. That means attacking a defense using the running game, and keeping Mannion and Cooks off the field as long as possible.

Oregon State

After losing the first game of the year to FCS Eastern Washington, the Beavers reeled off six straight wins. Unfortunately, that’s where the success came to a crashing halt, as it lost its final five games to close out the year.

Now the Beavers have a chance to travel to Hawaii and keep this season from becoming a complete loss. To do that, it will have to find consistency through the air against the Broncos’ abysmal pass defense.

To find that consistency, the No. 1 goal must be protecting the football. Penalties will be a problem if they come in bulk, but turnovers are going to be a killer. If the Beavers can control the ball without giving it up, they’ll be in good shape.

As good as the Beavers have been throwing the ball, this game will likely come down to how successful they can be on defense.

Their defense has been horrid this season against both the run and the pass. As a result, they’re 96th in the nation in points allowed.

Despite the defense, look for the Beavers to come away with a win both SU and ATS.

Their strength of schedule has been preparing them for this contest, and while losses never look good, they help toughen you up come bowl season.

Prediction: Oregon State -2.5
