The four-year starter was one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. Can Boise State continue to be an elite team nationally without Moore under center?

Chris Petersen is one of the hottest commodities in the coaching world, and Boise State is thrilled he is still with the team. For the past few years, numerous teams have tried to snatch him away; but Petersen continues to re-affirm his commitment to the Broncos program. Boise State has proven itself to the college football nation numerous times in the past few years, but it seems they’ll have to do it again this season. Let’s take a look at the team’s roster heading into 2012.

Team Strengths:

Blake Renaud and J.C. Percy should lead a very strong group of linebackers for Boise State. Renaud is only a sophomore, but he has as much talent as anyone on this entire defense. Percy has finished second in the team in tackles twice, and he’ll serve as a senior leader for this defense.

The Broncos will definitely miss Doug Martin, but D.J. Harper will have his chance to shine at tailback this year. Harper is a speed burner who can cut on a dime. The only issue with him has been his health. If he stays healthy, expect a massive season from him. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Boise State has plenty of talent at wide receiver. Matt Miller was a freshman All-American in 2011, and he has the skill set to be a star for this team. Mitch Burroughs should emerge as a play maker at the wide receiver spot as well.

Team Weaknesses:

How can the biggest question mark not be the quarterback spot? Kellen Moore was the perfect signal caller for this offense, and there is a massive battle underway for the job this season. Four different guys are being considered for the spot. The team will have a drop off at this position, but how big will the drop in production be?

The team’s top five defensive linemen are gone. Shea McClellin is a very big loss because of what he could do as far as rushing the passer. Boise State doesn’t have the depth along the defensive front that most top teams have.

2012-2013 Boise State Broncos Football Prediction: 11-2

Boise State should take care of business inside the Mountain West in their last year with the conference. The Broncos will be playing in the Big East after this season. Petersen has shown the ability to do some magnificent things with his teams, but you have to think this year’s team will slip a little bit because of the huge talent losses.

Boise State starts out with a game at East Lansing against Michigan State. If they can find a way to win that one, it certainly isn’t out of the question that this team could go unbeaten during the regular season. More than likely this team will lose a couple games along the way, but don’t expect a major drop off.
