Every college ball fan remembers Boise’s remarkable Fiesta Bowl upset of Oklahoma in 2006. The Broncos play in the decidedly flaccid WAC and have enough returning talent to virtually sweep the schedule or maybe even go unbeaten in 2009. Pivot Kellen Moore had a superb freshman season last year, where he went 281-405 for 25 scores and just under 3,500 yards.

The southpaw returns to guide an offense that should be able to capitalize. High-motor defensive end Ryan Winterswyk and a great secondary will lead the defense.

The defense should be improved with plenty of experience in the front seven. Jan Jorgensen and Matt Bauman stand out.

Team Strengths
The Broncos have the best secondary in the conference. Seniors Kyle Wilson and Brandyn Thompson lock down the corner positions, returning starting safety Jeron Johnson is the leading tackler and highly-touted JUCO Garcia Day provides depth. The offensive line is pretty salty and Moore should be hooking up with junior Austin Pettis plenty this season.

There will also be a solid special teams unit to look forward to.

Team Weaknesses
Boise lose Ian Johnson, the tailback who ranks second on the school’s career rushing list. The Broncos must replace veteran leadership at receiver and after Winterswyk, the defensive line is green.

However, look for sophomore Byron Hout to make some noise if Winterswyk gets double-team often.

Perhaps the thing most working in Boise State’s favor this season is their powder-puff schedule. Boise plays the Oregon Ducks on a Thursday night to open the season, but after that all the games are very winnable, and the Broncos also of course could beat Oregon. One interesting stat is that the Broncos join USC as the only FBS teams to win 80 games over the past seven years.

They might even add thirteen to that total in 2009.

2009 Boise State Broncos Record Prediction: 12-1
