Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Kansas St. Wildcats Gambling Prediction & Week 9 Preview

Red Raiders vs Wildcats NCAA Football Spread/Handicapping

The Kansas State Wildcats were able to leapfrog the Oregon Ducks for the No. 3 spot in the BCS this week, and following a dominant performance against the once highly touted West Virginia Mountaineers, you have to assume this is one of the best teams in the NCAA on both sides of the ball.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders haven’t been scrubs either, as their No. 14 ranking is higher than some projected them to be at this point in the year.

Texas Tech Red Raiders

After a disappointing second half of last season, the Texas Tech Red Raiders have bounced back nicely halfway through 2012. The team’s only loss this year is to an Oklahoma team that if not for their only loss would in the mix for a BCS title. The only bad sign for the Red Raiders? Oklahoma’s only loss came against the very same Kansas State team they’re playing this week.

Putting up points against West Virginia isn’t something to get too excited over, as the Mountaineers allow nearly 40 points per contest (118th in the nation), but holding them more than 27 points under their own season average was quite impressive. Kansas State is a much, much better defensive team than West Virgina, so the Red Raiders shouldn’t expect their own points to come as easily this weekend.

If the team is able to score on the Wildcats, quarterback Seth Doege is going to be the reason why. The senior has been outstanding on the year, as he’s thrown for 2,209 yards and 28 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. He is coming off his best performance of the year, having thrown seven touchdowns against TCU’s defense. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Kansas State Wildcats

The Kansas State Wildcats are one of the best teams in college football, and it’s because they can compete on both offense and defense. The team scores 42.9 points per game (10th in the nation) and allows just 16.1 points per game (14th in the nation).

The superstar for this team has been Heisman hopeful Colin Klein. He can make plays both on the ground and through the air, as evident by his seven total touchdowns last weekend. The senior quarterback has taken over this team, and if he gets going against Texas Tech, there’s no stopping the Wildcats.

Despite Klein’s success, this team doesn’t throw the ball as effectively as you’d expect. They’re just 92nd in the nation in passing yards per contest (201.0), and it’s their rushing attack that really keeps defenses honest. The Red Raiders allow just 111.4 yards per game on the ground, so this will be a battle of whether or not Texas Tech can force KState to the air, where the Red Raiders are ranked 11th in the nation on defense.

Kansas State has turned the ball over just once in conference play. If Texas Tech can snatch the ball away from Klein and the Wildcats this weekend, it will force the home team to play a desperation game they’ve yet to come across this season. If they can’t, however, and Kansas State protects the ball, this game should stay in the Wildcats’ favor.
