The Beavers are looking to continue their historic showing this week, while the Huskies are doing everything in their power to salvage a year that been rough up to this point.

Oregon State Beavers

The Oregon State Beavers’ starting quarterback Sean Mannion has been out the past two weeks, and while he’s set to return this weekend, his backup Cody Vaz stepped in and played at an extremely high level. The passing game didn’t skip a beat, and they remain the 14th best passing offense in the nation (310.7 yards per game).

On the ground, this team struggles. They’re just 110th in the country at 108.3 yards per game, which means an off game from the quarterback could be devastating to the team’s entire season. Bringing back Mannion this week is a step in the right direction, but if he is rusty coming off surgery, the team can’t be afraid to fall back on Vaz for the third week in a row.

Aside from the running game, the only thing this team has going against them at this point is that they’ve yet to show they can improve in the penalty department. Discipline isn’t likely the issue, as they’ve showed they can secure the ball with just six turnovers on the year, but if they can tone down the penalties (82.2 yards per game), there will be less margin for error moving forward.

Washington Huskies

The Washington Huskies are a team full of talent, but they’ve yet to show it in 2012. Quarterback Keith Price hasn’t had anywhere near the breakout season that many thought he would have, and while his game has been inconsistent, a large part of it is because his line hasn’t protected him up to this point.

While Price’s game hasn’t been sharp, wideouts Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Kasen Williams have shown potential to be big-play contributors. Running back Bishop Sankey has also started to come into his own, helping take a slight amount of pressure off the quarterback. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

If the offense can’t get rolling, the team must get pressure on whoever is in at quarterback. This is easier said than done, however, as the Huskies have the fourth-fewest sacks in the entire conference.

The Huskies lead the overall series against the Beavers 58-34-4, but Oregon State is the team rolling at this point in 2012. If Washington can use their 19th-ranked pass defense to rattle OSU’s offense, the Huskies will have the edge.

The problem for UW is that Oregon State has allowed just 11 sacks all year long. They’ve done a much better job protecting their quarterback than Washington this season, which is why the Beavers’ quarterbacks have been outstanding, while Price has been a major disappointment. The potential for an upset is there, but recent quarterback results are just too tough to ignore heading into the ninth week of the season.
