The Wildcats want to prove that they’re not nearly as bad as they looked last week, while the Beavers are out to show that they truly are as good as they’ve looked early this season.

Oregon State Beavers

The Oregon State Beavers have paved an interesting path heading into their week five matchup against the Arizona Wildcats. The season began with the postponing of their contest against Nicholls State, and they’ve since moved on to defeat two top-20 teams en route to a 2-0 record.

Quarterback Sean Mannion is coming off a game against the UCLA Bruins where he threw for a career-high 379 yards. The team’s passing game has looked good (12th in the nation), but it’s their defense that has looked unreal up to this point.

Averaging just 18.5 points per game, the Beavers have needed the defense to step up, and that’s exactly what has happened. Allowing just 13.5 points per contest, the team from Corvallis has given up an average of just 53.5 rushing yards in their two games this year. That would be expected, of course, if they were playing FCS programs, but they’ve shut down two Heisman candidates in Wisconsin’s Monte Ball and UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin.

Arizona’s rushing attack is strong, but the Beavers will have to stop both the run and the pass to take down the home team this week.

Arizona Wildcats

A one-game road trip is usually just a blip in the schedule for any major football program, but following last week’s 49-0 meltdown against the Oregon Ducks, returning home to Arizona Stadium is exactly what the Wildcats need. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Arizona is 3-1 through four weeks in 2012. Last week’s game was ugly from beginning to finish, but we can’t forget about what this team had done leading into their game at Autzen Stadium. Winning their first three games of the year, the Wildcats showed that they can run, they can pass and they can defend against quality opponents.

The Wildcats like to run their quarterback in the option, but they’ll have two things going against them this week. First, quarterback Matt Scott was banged up in the first quarter of the Oregon game. His rushing attack was limited following the injury, and if he’s feeling any lingering effects, expect him to struggle outside the pocket. Second, Oregon State’s rushing defense in among the best in the country. The team is going to need a balanced attack, and if they can’t find it, the Wildcats could struggle at home this week.

Although these two teams have played each other closely in recent memory, the Beavers have won eight of their last 10 meetings, including their last five trips to Tuscon. This game is going to come down to whether or not the Beavers can stop Arizona’s passing attack, and if they can, they’ll walk away from the dessert with their first 3-0 start in 10 years.
