Preview:

The game everyone has been waiting for finally kicks off Thursday night in the most revered venue in NCAA football. We will have the pleasure of watching two teams that are outstanding at their craft. With a Crimson Tide win, SEC fans can maintain their smugness and holier-than-thou attitude.

However, until the Big 12 Championship (where they almost laid an egg against Nebraska) Texas was blowing people away.

Coming into this match-up, Alabama looked more impressive with its 32-13 thrashing of Florida, the SEC program I (and many others) predicted would win all the stakes in 2009. The offense has weapons like RB Trent Richardson, WR Julio Jones and Marquis Maze and TE Colin Peek, but the attack is understandably fueled by Heisman winning tailback Mark Ingram. The Tide’s talented backs and strong offensive line has manhandled all comers throughout the season and Texas will have to watch they don’t fall to a similar fate.

Pivot Greg McElroy can make a play with his arm, but the offense is such that if one could miraculously slow down the running game, they could have a chance against Nick Saban’s men. For Texas’ part, veteran QB Colt McCoy will just sling the ball to anyone and routinely pass or run for a first down in crucial spots. McCoy is one of the more special players the prestigious Longhorns program has had over the years. Also, we must remember that fundamentally, both teams are defensive stalwarts.

If one team started scoring frequently, I could see the opponent keeping pace – but I could also see a titanic defensive struggle where field goals are hard to come by.

When it comes right down to it, we’re going to see two excellent programs that deserve to be here.

We’re going to see oodles of names that will ring a bell come NFL Draft Day. Finally, all signs are pointing to us seeing a memorable game.

2009 Team Stats

Team Offense: Texas 16th
Alabama 32nd

Team Defense: Texas 3rd
Alabama 2nd

Trends:
Texas is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Texas’s last 6 games
Alabama is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games

Pick: Alabama -2.5
