2013-14 Preview (ACC) BC

The Eagles have fallen. From 1999 through 2010 they won at least 7 games every season but they have won just a total of 6 the last two seasons combined.

Though they are not a blue blood power in college football that was not acceptable and thus they got rid of coach Frank Spaziani and enter 2013 with a new coach – Steve Addazio – a high energy guy who should have success provided he can get enough talented players onto campus and keep them eligible.

Boston College is hoping that 2013 can be a positive step back towards being a dangerous team to tangle with in the ACC. The conference added two new teams this year (Pitt and Syracuse) and both are better than BC right now so the climb may be steeper than it was when they first joined the conference. It won’t get any easier with Louisville and Notre Dame joining the year after (sort of)

The best thing the Eagles have going for them heading into the season is experience on offense. 7 seniors are expected to start on this side of the ball led by underappreciated QB Chase Rettig. Rettig’s top target WR Alex Amidon also returns, the duo were more lethal than expected last season and produced 1210 yards receiving tops among returning players in the ACC. With a veteran line protecting him Rettig is poised for his best season yet and they will need it.

However, BC also needs to improve on the conference’s worst running game. Senior RB Andre Williams returns and they need him to start breaking some big plays. Also, the Eagles need to play with the lead more, at least sometimes, so that can let the running game grind out the game. They didn’t have a ton of opportunities to do that last year and their run game is not potent enough to use when they are playing catchup. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

A below average defense returns 6 starters for Addazio’s first season, hard to know whether that is good or bad. 5 of those returnees are in the back 7 so there is hope BC can be decent against the pass again. It was obvious they were missing first round pick MLB Luke Kuechly but if the defensive personnel is any good they could be a terror next season as only two projected starters this season are seniors.

2013-14 Record Projection: 3-9

Odds are that Boston College will make a slow rise back to the middle of the ACC. When they were having strong seasons over the past decade schools like Clemson and North Carolina were floundering but now they have risen to the top and look poised to stay. Addazio looks like the right man for the job with his energy and connections to the important recruiting fields in Florida but only time will tell – he wasn’t with Temple for a full cycle so it is hard to know. This season there are just not a lot of opportunities for wins on the schedule. Even a mid-season visit to New Mexico State is no gimme for this team. The best that BC can hope for this season is to ruin somebody’s chances with their best game. Maybe, just maybe they take a bite out of Florida State at the end of September
