Big 12 2010-2011 Football Previews: Baylor Bears

Coach: Art Briles
2009 Record: 4-8

Baylor Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +50000

The Baylor Bears had higher expectations last year than in quite some time, but Robert Griffin’s ACL injury dashed those hopes early in the season. Griffin is expected to be back and healthy this year, so the Bears once again have more hope than normal. There are plenty of question marks to go around, but the talent level is definitely at Baylor.

Art Briles is trying to change the mindset of the entire Baylor football program, and while he has yet to do so, many believe he is making positive changes.

The Big 12 South is as tough as any conference in the nation, which makes it tough for Baylor to take a large step forward. Sportsbook.com

Team Strengths:

Robert Griffin III is an absolute play maker at the quarterback spot. The ACL injury may have slowed him a touch, but he has blazing speed and is as elusive as any player in the conference. As a freshman he accounted for 28 touchdowns. As long as he stays healthy, I expect a big year from Griffin.

The special teams are solid all the way around for Baylor. The Bears have one of the best punters in the nation and a solid freshman kicker as well. The return units and coverage units all did well in the Big 12 last season.

The defensive secondary is proving to be an area where Baylor has plenty of depth and some good young talent. Chance Casey has a shot at being a very good one, and the Bears picked up some solid recruits that really bolstered their secondary.

Team Weaknesses:

The Baylor Bears absolutely must improve when it comes to stopping the run. The defensive line and the linebackers are going to have to step it up in a big way this year if they hope to make big strides forward. Baylor ranked last in the Big 12 in rushing defense a year ago.

The receiving corps isn’t as deep or talented as they would like. Robert Griffin can certainly run with the best of them, but the Bears will have to be able to throw the ball effectively to keep teams guessing.

The offensive line will need to gel once again after it lost some pretty impressive talent to the NFL. This should be a real area of emphasis for Baylor as they certainly want to keep defenses off of Griffin.

2010-2011 Baylor Football Prediction: 6-7

I think there is a good chance the Baylor Bears will get into a bowl game this season. The conference schedule being so tough will keep them from making too much of a jump.

I think Griffin and the offense will be able to move the ball effectively, but the defense is definitely a question mark. If this team could win at Colorado or at Oklahoma State they have a chance to break the .500 mark this year.

I think there will definitely be improvement, but the team has too many holes to be really good.
