MAC Conference Football Previews: Ball State

Head Coach: Stan Parrish
2009 Record: 2-11

Ball State Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

What to make of Ball State in 2010? The program was often dominant in 2008 but was a nightmare last year, going just 2-11. That said, the Cardinals return about half their starters and boast a few game breakers on either side of the ball.

Maybe coach Stan Parrish will have more to work with this year.

Team Strengths:

Ball State looks to be one of the MAC’s better rushing teams and could well end up the best. In MiQuale Lewis, the Cardinals have their own little Maurice Jones-Drew. Lewis is 5’6” and 201 pounds. He ran for 871 yards and scored five times last season.

The year prior, he had almost twice the carries and exploded for 1,736 yards with 22 scores. As long as he runs left, behind the dominant side of the O-line led by Cameron Lowry, he could have another monster season. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Cardinals have holes on defense, sure, but they also have some useful players. Linebackers Davyd Jones and Travis Freeman are solid. Safety Sean Baker also demonstrated big-play ability with four interceptions last year.

Team Weaknesses:

Not a good sign that we’re halfway through this article without even mentioning Ball State’s quarterback, is it? The truth is that the Cardinals hardly know their own quarterbacking situation. Will Kelly Page return as starter or will it be Aaron Mershman or perhaps recruit Keith Wenning? At press time, Ball State hadn’t decided.

Despite having a few noteworthy names, Ball State still plays below-average defense. It only held opponents under 20 points once last season. It has to show more consistency and get to the quarterback better.

Ball State 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 5-7

Ball State’s offensive line, rushing attack and collection of defensive playmakers should result in improved play this year, but we have to be realistic with our expectations.

This is still a team that doesn’t know who its quarterback is and hasn’t shown it can keep teams off the scoreboard. The growing pains will continue.
