Auburn

The Tigers crazy 2010 ride has been almost entirely on the broad shoulders of QB Cam Newton, and that’s just fine with everyone at Auburn. Newton is the Heisman frontrunner and has smashed every QB rushing record in the SEC – with a few weeks left in the season.

No one can contain Newton on the ground and if the Tigers veteran O-line can keep plowing open lanes for him, it will be very difficult for Ole Miss to pull the upset. Tigers RB Michael Dyer runs the ball well when Newton doesn’t have the pigskin, and Newton can pass just enough (1,364 yards and 13 TDs) to keep defenses honest.

The Tigers’ D hasn’t been quite as stingy as its usual reputation, but with Newton it hasn’t needed to be. If things keep going the way they have been this Saturday, Auburn should do enough to remain unbeaten.

Ole Miss

The Rebels have a dynamic playmaker of their own at pivot in transfer Jeremiah Masoli. He’s been somewhat inconsistent in 2010 but had a great game last week against Arkansas with over 400 total yards and three TDs.

Ole Miss would love to pull an upset of the top dog SEC West team in The Grove, but for that to be even a possibility Masoli and RB Brandon Bolden must control the clock and the Rebels defense must wake up and produce a season-defining performance. Lots of good defenses haven’t been able to stop Newton thus far, and Ole Miss ranks a miserable 101st in points against (averaging 32 allowed per).

The Rebs might move the ball on the ground and Masoli will doubtlessly be looking to assert himself, going in as the overlooked QB, but there’s simply no evidence that Ole Miss can stop Newton.

The Pick: Newton rushes – and maybe throws a little more than last week against LSU – en route to an Auburn win at Oxford and optimism continuing to build up to an epic season-ending game at Alabama.
