SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Auburn Tigers

Coach: Gene Chizik
2009 Record: 8-5

Auburn Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +4000

Many people questioned Auburn’s hiring of Gene Chizik before 2009, but Chizik’s Tigers stormed out of the gates and won their first five last year. The Tigers did slow down and end at just 8-5 for the year, but the improvement was clear, especially on offense. Gus Malzahn is one of the best offensive coordinators in the game, so you can count on the Tigers to run some unique offensive sets that will keep the defense back on their heels.

Auburn lost both its starting quarterback and its starting running back, but most experts assume the offense will still be quite good in 2010. The defense is the area where improvement is needed right away if the Tigers are going to contend with the top teams in this tough conference.

In 2009, the Tigers ranked last in the SEC in points allowed at 27.5 per game. If this figure doesn’t improve, the Tigers won’t climb the SEC rankings this season.

Team Strengths:

The Tigers have some nice weapons to throw the football to, both out of the backfield and at wide receiver. Mario Fannin will take over for Ben Tate at running back, and Fannin is an exceptional receiver out of the backfield. Fannin also averaged 8.4 yards per carry last year, so he has the potential to be a star.

On the outside, Darvin Adams will likely be the top target. He caught 60 passes for 997 yards last year, and should see plenty of action this year. Terrell Zachery is the home run threat on the outside. Zachery averaged an astonishing 18.3 yards per reception last year.

On the defense the strength is at linebacker. All three linebackers return from a year ago, and seniors Craig Stevens and Josh Bynes will lead the way. The fact that the linebackers will be such an area of strength should help the defense gel this season.

Wes Bynum is also a very nice strength at the kicker position. Bynum nailed all 54 extra point attempts last year and 15 out of 16 field goals.

Team Weaknesses:

The single biggest area of weakness on a defense that is suspect is almost certainly the front four. The defensive line hasn’t shown that they can help pressure the quarterback at all, or clog up the running lanes. The linebackers are very good, but they need some help from the front four.

Cameron Newton should be a solid quarterback, but it may take him a little time to get used to the system Malzahn runs. Don’t be surprised if Newton struggles for the first part of the year.

Overall team depth is a bit of a problem for Auburn. The Tigers have quite a few solid players, but their bench is a bit limited, which could mean they’ll wear down in crunch time.

2010-2011 Auburn Football Prediction: 9-4

Auburn’s offense could struggle a bit at the beginning of 2010 as Newton gets a better grip on the system, but the schedule is quite easy this year for the Tigers. Auburn has a legitimate shot of winning their first six games before their schedule gets tougher. I think Fannin will do very well in the backfield and Newton will be good by season’s end.

The defense should be slightly better than last year, so I think the team will move up just a little from a year ago.
