SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Arkansas Razorbacks

Coach: Bobby Petrino
2009 Record: 8-5

Arkansas Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +4000

Bobby Petrino is getting things done in Fayetteville, and 2010 has the potential to be a big year for the Razorbacks of Arkansas. Last year, Arkansas went 8-5, but the offense proved to be one of the best in the country. Ten starters return for this season from that terrific offense and seven defensive starters return as well. The team appears locked and loaded to be a real force in the SEC West.

Ryan Mallett is the one that makes this high powered offense go, and he is an amazing NFL prospect because of his size and talent level. The part that is scary for the rest of the SEC is the balance that Arkansas has been able to reach by getting a solid offensive line and a good stable of running backs.

Defenses will definitely have trouble knowing what kind of game plan to use against this Arkansas offense. Sportsbook.com

Team Strengths:

The biggest strength on this team is their 6’7 star quarterback, Ryan Mallett. Mallett’s big frame allows him to see over the defense and his arm strength is absolutely amazing. In last year’s sophomore campaign, Mallett threw for 3,624 yards and 30 touchdowns, while throwing just six interceptions. Those kinds of numbers can carry a football team.

All three of the leading receivers from last year’s squad are back, and they should be racking up some impressive numbers again in 2010.

Joe Adams, Jarius Wright, and Greg Childs all have the ability to break it each time they touch the ball. Adams actually averaged an impressive 19 yards per catch in 2009. The receiving corps will be in good shape for 2010.

The offensive line is intact and they have built a solid reputation for being able to run block and provide pass protection for Mallett. This line won’t hold the dynamic offense down at all.

Team Weaknesses:

As a whole, the defense is much weaker than the offense. In fact, the defense was ranked the worst in the SEC in 2009. If that doesn’t change, the Razorbacks won’t reach their full potential in 2010.

The defensive secondary is a real area of concern. They lost a couple of starters here, and many of their corners and safeties have proven vulnerable to giving up big plays. The Razorbacks need to find some solid fundamental defensive backs.

The linebackers are talented, but they need to stay disciplined on defense. This team has a history of getting out of position and allowing big plays too often, which can be the difference between a win and a loss.

2010-2011 Arkansas Football Prediction: 10-3

The Razorbacks better be ready to play early in the season because dates with Georgia, Alabama, and Auburn all take place in the first half of the year. Obviously, the home date against Alabama on September 25th will get all the publicity, but Arkansas needs to take care of business in Georgia the week before. I fully expect this Arkansas offense to be one of the top five in the nation.

The defense should be improved, but they’ll need to stop shooting themselves in the foot with big mistakes. This should definitely be at least a top 20 team.

The Razorbacks are a dangerous group this year, so keep a close eye on them.
