This year’s R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl may end up being different from past New Orleans Bowl games. Typically, this is a high scoring bowl game. In the last six games, starting with last year the point totals have been 77,62, 69, 74, 57, and 71. This year, I’m expecting a lower point total. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s lower than 50 points.

The reason for that is Tulane’s defense and UL-Lafayette’s QB Terrance Broadway probably won’t play. Starting with Tulane’s defense. In conference play, Tulane only allowed 17.3 points per game. While on the offensive side, they struggled all season long. Tulane only scored 25 points per game for the season and only put up 304 total yards. But, Tulane should put up their fair share of points versus UL Lafayette as they don’t have a particularly strong defense.

As mentioned, UL-Lafayette has a below average defense and without their star quarterback the Rajin’ Cajuns may have their hands full. This is the third straight year that the Ragin’ Cajuns of UL-Lafayette will play in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. UL-Lafayette have won the other two times versus San Diego State in 2011 and East Carolina in 2012. In 2013, it might be a bit different, though.

The big difference between this year and last year is Terrance Broadway is doubtful to play in this year’s New Orleans Bowl. Broadway is doubtful to play after breaking his forearm against Louisiana-Monroe on November 30th. Last year, Broadway was the MVP of the New Orleans Bowl after throwing for 316 yards and rushing for 108 yards.

We can not only reference last year, but just take a look at the Rajin’ Cajuns final game of the season. Without Broadway UL-Lafayette was a shell of themselves. UL-Lafayette couldn’t move the ball and only generated 8 points which came very late in the 4th quarter.

The Rajin’ Cajuns were only able to rack up 212 yards of total offense. 143 came through the air, while only 69 came on the ground. A big difference from the 216 passing yards, 207 rushing yards, and 424 total offensive yards UL-Lafayette generated for the season. Not only that, but UL-Lafayette scored 34 points per game.

Danny’s FREE College Football Pick:

All in all, with no Terrance Broadway going for UL-Lafayette I don’t see the Ragin’ Cajuns winning this game. The number 1 reason why the Ragin’ Cajuns are in a bowl is because of Broadway. Without Broadway it’ll be a tough task for the Rajin’ Cajuns to win. I expect Tulane to win pretty handily with their defense controlling the game.

At the time of this post, there isn’t an over/under, but I do expect a lowish scoring game. I’d expect it to be around 48 or so. Either way, the best pick of the game is Tulane beating UL-Lafayette and covering the 1 point spread.

Pick: Tulane -1
Prediction: Tulane 30 – UL-Lafayette 17
