The Belk Bowl has been around a few years now. It used to be called the Queen City Bowl, the Continental Tire Bowl, and the Meineke Car Care Bowl, but since 2011 it’s been known as the Belk Bowl. Throughout the name changes, though, it’s still been played at the Carolina Panthers’ home  of Bank of America Stadium.

Last year, Cincinnati played the Duke Blue Devils and beat them 48-34 with quarterback Brendon Kay earning the MVP honor. Funny enough, though, Kay wasn’t the starting coming into the season. That honor belonged to Munchie Legaux. Leguax got hurt, Kay took over and led Cincinnati back to the Belk Bowl.

Kay got better as the season progressed and in games he started the Bearcats went 8-2 scoring 34.1 points per game. As an individual, Kay threw for 3,121 yards, completing 68% of his passes,  22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

North Carolina’s season turned around when Bryn Renner suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. North Carolina turned to Marquise Williams and when they did North Carolina ended the year 3-1.

This was a Tar Heel team that continued to fight throughout the year. They didn’t get the results they wanted after starting the year 1-5, but they competed in most of those games including two games versus Virginia Tech and Miami (FL) where they only lost by 10 and 4 points respectively.

After those games, that’s when the Tar Heels 5 straight wins to become bowl eligible. When you look at the Tar Heels as a team they are statistically impressive. They average 432 total offensive yards, and throw for 286 passing yards, and rush for 146 yards. And really, we talked about Marquise Williams giving this team a jolt, but tight end Eric Ebron has been the steady rock all year long.

Ebron was a finalist for the Mackey Award (the best tight end in college football), and he led his team with 55 receptions, and 895 yards.

When looking at both teams, both teams put up the yards and points. Cincinnati averages 482 of total offensive yards with 313 of them coming through the air.

Both offenses are good and both teams are facing defenses that aren’t particularly good. North Carolina averaged 25.7 points per game including giving up 27 points to South Carolina, 55 points to East Carolina, 27 to both Virginia Tech and Miami (FL). While, the Bearcats were gashed by the Fighting Illini for 45 points early in the season.

Danny’s FREE College Football Pick:

All in all, I like Cincinnati at +2.5 and the over 56.5. I believe this will be a back and forth game with both teams scoring a lot of points. I believe Cincinnati quarterback will have a repeat performance of his Belk Bowl from last season and lead his team to a lot of points and a win.

Pick: Cincinnati +2.5, Over 56.5
Prediction: Cincinnati 35 – North Carolina 28
