The 2011 Senior Bowl pits some of the best college seniors from the North against some of the best seniors from the South. Kickoff from Ladd-Peebles Stadium is set for 4 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on the NFL Network.

The Senior Bowl is designed to give the top college seniors in the country an opportunity to showcase their talents in what they hope to be one of their first stepping stones to a successful career in the NFL. This game and the week of preparation and practice before it,  gives NFL coaches and scouts their first real up-close and personal look at some of the athletes that could very well be on their draft board at the end of April. Last year 84 players in this game ended up being drafted by an NFL team.

Marvin Lewis, head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals and his staff will handle the coaching duties for the North squad while newly appointed head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Chan Gailey, and his staff will do the same for the South.

The North’s roster features quarterback’s Jake Locker of Washington and Ricky Stanzi from Iowa. Locker will try and reestablish himself as one of the top QB’s in this year’s draft class while Stanzi will be looking to capitalize on all the early hype that has been thrown his way by some of the draft experts. A few running backs looking to make a splash will be Roy Helu Jr. from Nebraska and DeMarco Murray of Oklahoma, while the wide receiver position is highlighted by a pair of Boise State Broncos; Austin Pettis and Titus Young. A few defensive players to keep an eye on for the North are DE Ryan Kerrigan from Purdue and DT Christian Ballard from Iowa. These two both have a combination of brute strength along with excellent athleticism that could have NFL scouts drooling at the prospect of them filling holes on a defensive line.

The South roster features a couple of players such as running back Noel Devine from Pittsburgh and QB Christian Ponder from Florida State, who need to turn some heads to enhance their current position in the draft. Another QB, Andy Dalton from TCU will be out to show that his abilities can translate to continued success at the next level. Wide receiver Leonard Hankerson of Miami (FL) as already turned some heads in the first few practices and is definitely a player to watch for come Saturday. Another player to keep an eye on is tight end Luke Stocker, out of Tennessee. Stocker, at 6’6”, 253 pounds already has the size for the NFL but his hands could be his greatest asset.

When it comes to defense, Texas cornerback Curtis Brown and Texas A&M linebacker Von Brown have both been moving up a few mock draft boards this week and would really enhance their stock with a solid performance this game. Another linebacker that has been drawing some attention is Kelvin Sheppard from LSU. He has a non-stop motor on a 6’2”, 250 pound frame making him definitely worth a second or even third look.

While a game like this is always hard to handicap given its nature, if you decide to make a play go with the North. It won last year 31-13 and has won four of the last six games straight-up by an average margin of victory of 18 points.

The Pick: North
