2010-2011 BCS Championship Gambling Predictions / NCAA Football Handicapping

For those college football betting nuts out there, it’s never too early to start thinking about the 2010/2011 BCS picture.

As always, there will be a hodgepodge of contenders and pretenders; some of them obvious and some emerging from the woodwork.

NCAA football betting: BCS Championship Odds Update

We’ve covered all the major conferences and picked our winners. But who wins it all in college football betting this year? Let’s review the current top 20 according to the majority of sportsbooks.

1. OHIO STATE
BCS Championship odds: +450

All aboard the Buckeyes hype train. For most of the offseason, defending national champion Alabama had top honors, but Ohio State has taken over. Bettors’ confidence in 6’6” pivot Terrelle Pryor is growing. The Rose Bowl win went a long way.

2. ALABAMA
BCS Championship odds: +600

Before we anoint Ohio State the national champion, let’s remember that Alabama hasn’t lost any of its key offensive pieces. That Heisman Trophy winner guy, Mark Ingram, returns to the backfield. Remember him? And then there’s Trent Richardson. And Julio Jones. And Greg McElroy. The Crimson Tide aren’t ready to back down just yet.

3. OKLAHOMA
BCS Championship odds: +600

This is a curious rank to me. No Sam Bradford yet the Sooners have the same odds as Alabama? It’s a reloading year for them if you ask me.

4. FLORIDA
BCS Championship odds: +700

Some bettors will put Florida in the same boat as Oklahoma since the Gators must adjust to life without Tim Tebow. But Urban Meyer is still steering the ship after all and John Brantley could be better behind center than people expect. Florida won’t regress too much.

5. BOISE STATE
BCS Championship odds: +1000

It’s a given that Boise State will run away with the WAC. But now it’s gaining steam in the BCS title discussion. It’s hard to argue the ascension. The Broncos have 21 starters returning to a team that already went undefeated last year – including Kellen Moore.

6. NEBRASKA
BCS Championship odds: +1200

I’m surprised that the Cornhuskers aren’t rated higher than sixth. Their running game looks formidable and I don’t think their “D” will suffer nearly as much as people think without Ndamukong Suh. This is a deep team.

7. TCU
BCS Championship odds: +1500

The nation’s most devastating defense a year ago won’t quite have the same teeth with Jerry Hughes gone but TCU’s offense could make up for any defensive regression. Most of its O-line is back and Andy Dalton may be ready for a leap forward.

8. TEXAS
BCS Championship odds: +1500

Reloading year. No disrespect to Garrett Gilbert but he simply isn’t Colt McCoy. And Texas has too much competition in the Big 12 alone.

9. OREGON
BCS Championship odds: +1800

Jeremiah Masoli will sit out the year, suspended after a misdemeanor burglary charge, but Oregon has other options at quarterback (Nate Costa and Darron Thomas) who can fill in nicely and the defense looks fast and effective.

10. VIRGINIA TECH
BCS Championship odds: +2000

Like TCU, Virginia Tech is a school known for defense over offense in recent seasons. And, like TCU, the Hokies could undergo a transformation this year. Tyrod Taylor passed for 2,311 yards last year but also has 18 rushing touchdowns in his college career. Maybe he’s ready to lead this team.

11. MIAMI (FL)
BCS Championship odds: +2500

Everyone’s sexiest sleeper? Maybe. The Hurricanes went 3-1 against ranked opponents last year, their young “D” is ferocious, and Jacory Harris wants to make a statement as a senior.

12. IOWA
BCS Championship odds: +3000

Strong defense but can they win a national title with Ricky Stanzi? He’s too careless with the ball.

13. ARKANSAS
BCS Championship odds: +4000

Ryan Mallett alone makes the Razorbacks part of the discussion. Threw for 30 touchdowns versus seven picks last year. If only the “D” could support him better.

14. GEORGIA
BCS Championship odds: +4000

Georgia should score a decent amount but its defense looks dangerously inexperienced with just five starters returning.

15. LSU
BCS Championship odds: +4000

How can you pick a team to win a national title when it doesn’t even have its starting quarterback sorted out?

16. WISCONSIN
BCS Championship odds: +4000

Given their cushy schedule and John Clay’s play in the backfield, the Badgers have more upside than the two teams above them here.

17. PITTSBURGH
BCS Championship odds: +5000

There’s plenty to like about Pittsburgh – especially its pass rush and running game. But the O-line lost three starters and that could hurt badly.

18. NOTRE DAME
BCS Championship odds: +5000

Even with Brian Kelly taking the reins, I can’t imagine Notre Dame having a good year after losing Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate.

19. AUBURN
BCS Championship odds: +5000

A ho-hum defense and a good-but-not great offense aren’t enough for BCS glory.

20. PENN STATE
BCS Championship odds: +6000

We love Joe Paterno but I’m not sure Penn State can make up for quarterback Daryll Clark’s departure this season.
