USC has won the Pac-10 for seven straight years and in each of those seasons they have won eleven games. Last year’s defensive squad was one of the very best in recent NCAA history, allowing more than ten points only twice during the regular season. Then the Trojans outclassed their Big Ten opponent again in the Rose Bowl, scoring a two-touchdown victory over Penn State.

There are changes. Matt Sanchez, who had only one full year under his belt as the starting quarterback, left early for the NFL, and was the first-round draft choice of the New York Jets. I think it is safe to say that USC will still be able to continue putting up big numbers on offense. There is a quarterback competition, although it is expected that Aaron Corp, a blue-chipper who is ready to play as a sophomore, will get the starting assignment over freshman phenom Matt Barkley, who was generally regarded to be the best signal-caller to come out of high school this past season. It is not inconceivable that both of them will see quite a bit of action. Now that Mitch Mustain, an Arkansas transfer with a live arm, has cleared up his academic issues, he can give coach Pete Carroll a veteran option.

They will be aided by a ground attack that will be almost impossible to corral. If there is a better quartet anywhere than C.J. Gable, Joe McKnight, Marc Tyler and Stafon Johnson, we haven’t seen it. All of them averaged more than five yards a carry, led by McKnight’s 7.4. USC also returns the conference’s best pair of wide receivers in Damian Williams (58 catches, 869 yards) and Ronald Johnson (17.3-yard average). Junior David Ausberry and redshirt freshman Brice Butler will undoubtedly figure in the picture.

All five of the offensive line starters return, as do the second team members. This is an offensive front that is going to open up plenty of holes and take a lot of the pressure off either Corp, Barkley or Mustain. It may be head and shoulders above any unit in the country.

The flip side of that superior defense from last year is that there was always a chance that there would be massive personnel losses. That is the case here, as Carroll will have to replace nine departed starters, and no lightweights either – included in that group were linebackers Kaluka Maiava, Brian Cushing and Ray Maualuga, defensive linemen Clay Matthews, Kyle Moore and Fili Moala and cornerback Cary Harris. The mainstay on the defense is Taylor Mays, who has been a two-time All-America and will anchor the secondary from his free safety spot. There will be a lot expected of the new middle linebacker, Chris Galippo, who was one of the nation’s best when he came out of high school three years ago and is now a redshirt sophomore. Do not be surprised to see freshman Davon Kennard log an awful lot of time at defensive end on passing downs. He is a pass rusher with great quickness. On an overall basis, team’s opposing running attacks (and there are plenty of good runners in the Pac-10) may have more success against USC this year..

Like most of Carroll’s teams, this is a club deep in talent, and even when they have to replace starters, they are doing so with prized recruits. Yes, the cup runneth over at USC, although this year’s team will look different, in that the offense will have to score a lot to make up for the relative inexperience of the defense. That shouldn’t be hard to accomplish for this crew, though. The Trojans beat Ohio State 35-3 last year. This season they go to Columbus to face an angry Buckeye bunch. They should get by that one (the quickness is still superior), as well as everything else in the Pac-10, en route to a conference title and a possible meeting with Florida in the national title game. We’ll also be happy to go OVER the 10.5 wins as it is posted in the BetUS Sportsbook.
