Coach: Art Briles
2008 Record: 4-8

On the gridiron, Baylor has been at the bottom of the pecking order for as long as virtually anyone can remember. The Bears have been a piñata in recent seasons for the other powerhouses in the Big 12 South division. However, a couple of stud young guns might be changing the landscape – particularly jitterbug pivot Robert Griffin, a Texas high school record-breaker and All-American track star.

With a little help, Griffin and Co. might just earn their first bowl bid since 1994.2009 Baylor Bears Gambling Odds

While Griffin can obviously make plays with his feet, he has a couple bona fide targets in sophomore Kendall Wright and senior David Gettis. Gettis is 6”4, 210, a highly-touted prospect and also a former track standout. A couple beefy JUCO tackles – Danny Watkins and Marquis Franklin – should smooth out the offensive lumps. On defense, the bright shining star – The Lone Star, if you want a bad pun – is Mike ‘backer Joe Pawelek. He is one of the better linebackers in the conference.

Team Strengths
Though Baylor certainly doesn’t approach the depth of some other Big 12 programs, they have a fistful of impact players on both sides of the ball. The offense will funnel through Griffin, but tailback Jay Finley might crack 1,000 yards.

Pawelek, safety Jordan Lake and massive tackle (and Penn State transfer) Phil Taylor will make their presence known defensively.

Team Weaknesses
If the Bears start to suffer the injury bug, they may as well start hibernating. They have the bright spots in the starting lineup to remain competitive with some of the bigger dogs in the conference, but if they go down the deficit in depth will rear its ugly head.

The boys from Waco are vastly improved; Griffin, Pawelek and two other great defenders are enough for opposing coaches to adjust their game plans. The players also seem to be buying into Coach Briles’ schemes in only his second year at the helm. Though the Bears will likely get rolled by superpowers Texas and Oklahoma, they have the horses to hang with other traditional Texas state powers.

A bowl bid is not an absurd expectation for Baylor this season.

2009 Predicted Record: 7-6

It would be nice to see Baylor get back to their winning ways as they have fallen off the Map in the Big 12 over the past several seasons. They do have a decent nucleus of talent that may be able to get them into a minor bowl game this season.
