Coach: Gene Chizik
2008 Record: 5-7

Similar to Michigan, the Auburn Tigers are an esteemed football power that had some forehead-slapping results last season.

The offense had all the power of a 60-year old’s urinary flow and many people, fans included (perhaps even fans especially) questioned the hiring of former Iowa State coach Chizik. It is a truly profound question to ask whether Auburn can pull it together and re-assert itself in the SEC West in 2009. 2009 Auburn Tigers Gambling Odds

Between Auburn’s three quarterbacks – Kodi Burns, Chris Todd and Neil Caudle – they didn’t eclipse 2,000 yards passing and had a gross 7-13 TD/INT ratio. Evidently, that must improve for the offense’s balance. One of the best additions on offense was perhaps coordinator Gus Malzahn. He led a prolific attack at Tulsa and was the OC at Arkansas for a season. He should hopefully coax more production out of talented players this season.

Auburn has some characteristically strong athletes on defense.

Team Strengths
Running back Ben Tate should have a strong season and capable Mario Fannin backs him up. Defensive ends Antonio Coleman, Antoine Carter and Michael Goggans must re-assert the defense’s teeth; they have the talent to do so.

Center Ryan Pugh and left tackle Lee Ziemba are very strong in the trenches.

Team Weaknesses
Auburn needs to show there’s a new regime on offense. Malzahn must ensure that there is adequate passing to supplement some talented runners.

The defensive secondary must make a climb in production they should be capable of making, but it’s all the more important with attacks like Ole Miss, Alabama and Arkansas in Auburn’s division.

Auburn has always had a bunch of fans in a football-mad state and a hotbed for talent. Nothing has changed on that front. This team merely needs to show that they can run a scheme effectively and get back on the rails in a tough conference and tough division. Enough has been said about the SEC, but the end result for Auburn is that it doesn’t make things easier.

The Tigers get Ole Miss and hated ’Bama at home, but Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU and Georgia on the road will be stiff tests.

2009 Auburn Tigers Record Prediction: 7-5

I’m still scratching my head over Auburn hiring Chizick as their head coach. This program has obviously fallen on some hard times, but with his track record I question whether he is the guy to lead them back to prominence.

That being said I guess a .500 record would be a successful season at this point.

Gene Chizik’s hiring was met with quite a bit of controversy. It remains to be seen if he can actually coach, but he sure hit a homerun with his assistant coaches. Gus Malzahn is a great offensive mind who can turn the ho-hum Tigers offense into something decent sooner or later and Ted Roof, the new defensive coordinator, has head coaching experience at Duke.
