Coach: Mike Stoops
2008 Record: 8-5

It’s fair to say the Wildcats are carrying some momentum over from last season, after beating ranked BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl to finish 8-5. But everything isn’t perfect in the desert. There’s plenty of supplementary talent on offense, but the Cats lose a four-year starter in QB Willie Tuitama. On defense, all-conference linebacker Ronnie Palmer rides off into the dust.

All the same, there should be enough players to create some rumblings in the Pac-10.2009 Arizona Wildcats Gambling Odds

The quarterback position will be contested between highly-touted soph Matt Scott and rocket-armed Michigan State transfer Nick Foles. Receiver trio Delashun Dean, Terrell Turner and speedy Bug Wright and junior tailback Nic Grigsby will help the new field general.

A strong secondary and a couple other big-time players will anchor the Wildcats’ defense.

Team Strengths
Tight end Rob Gronkowski has ‘NFL’ written all over him. Going at 6”6, 265 lbs with some blocking ability and a gift at finding the open seam, he will be utilized more and should be a treat to watch.

On the line, guard Colin Baxter and center Blake Kerley should get used to pouring the syrup and cornerback Devin Ross will be electric.

Team Weaknesses
Tuitama left Tucson as Arizona’s all-time leading passer; it’s likely that Scott and/or Foles will have difficulty replacing that straightaway.

The offensive line loses a couple three-year starters, including Eben Britton who went to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the pro draft. Super accurate kicker Jason Bondzio has also moved on.

Once November rolls around, the Wildcats have a teeth-grinding remaining schedule. They play at Berkeley, versus Oregon, at in-state rival Arizona State and at Southern Cal. They also get the pleasure of going to Iowa City to play the Hawkeyes in their non-conference slate.

Nonetheless, if the team gets some strong QB play, Arizona will be a well-rounded team and could ruffle feathers in the conference.

2009 Predicted Record: 8-5
