The #6 seed Xavier Musketeers face the #3 seed Pittsburgh Panthers in the second round of the West regional with tip-off slated for 4:50 Sunday, March 21st in Milwaukee, WI.
With Richmond and Temple both falling in the first round, Xavier (25-8) is now the pride of the Atlantic 10. They came into this tournament having won eight out of their last nine games with the only blemish being an 85-89 OT loss to the Spiders in the conference tournament semifinals. Some have questioned their lofty sixth seed but they left no doubt that they belong there after a solid 65-54 win over the Big 10 Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The game was tied at 26 at the end of the first half, but sophomore G Jordon Crawford caught fire, scoring 17 of his game high 28 points in the second to help the Musketeers pull away.
Junior G Dante Jackson only scored 9 points but was instrumental in shutting Minnesota down from the outside and Jamel Mclean controlled the boards pulling down 14 rebounds. As they step up in weight class in this game, they will need all three of these first round stars to elevate their game to an even higher level.
Of all the teams from the Big East that made it into this tournament, Pittsburgh (25-8) could actually be the most dangerous one left. After a mid season stretch when they lost four out of five, they got back on track with wins over West Virginia and Villanova and had already had an early season win over Syracuse on their resume.
They only team that gave them any trouble was Notre Dame, beating them 53-68 in the regular season and 45-50 in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals and they have already made an early exit.
In the first round of this tournament they jumped out to a 39-26 halftime lead over 14th seed Oakland and coasted to an 89-66 win.
Six Panthers scored in double figures led by senior G Jermaine Dixon and junior F Gilbert Brown, who each had 17.
While only scoring seven points in this one, sophomore G Ashton Gibbs is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 15.8 points per game and should be more of a factor in this game.
Xavier is a very talented team and has a good chance to keep this game close right down to the wire.
Pittsburgh is just a bit more talented and a little deeper on the bench giving them the necessary edge in this game. Look for the Panthers to win and cover the one point.
