College Hoops Preview: Mountaineers vs. Buckeyes (Dec. 27)

The West Virginia Mountaineers travel to Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in a game that could have consequences down the road. We preview and predict this NCAA hoops matchup…

NCAA Basketball Lines West Virginia vs Ohio State

The West Virginia Mountaineers travel to Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in a game that could have consequences down the road. West Virginia only has 2 losses on the season, but sports betting fans have to realize that the conference that West Virginia plays out of, the Big East, is loaded with good teams.  The Mountaineers will need all of the help they can get when tournament seedings are announced in March. That means beating a ranked team on the road will really help their chances. Against the BetUS online basketball betting spread, the Mountaineers haven’t been all that great going 3 and 5.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are undefeated straight-up and 4 and 2 against the BetUS online betting spread. They’d be ranked higher in the polls if they had played better teams. But victories against Iona and Jackson aren’t going to cut it. The best team they have played this season is Notre Dame. For college basketball betting fans, the jury is still out regarding the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Here are my personal online betting odds for this game.

West Virginia Mountaineers + 4 ½ – 110 O 163 ½ – 110
Ohio State Buckeyes – 4 ½ – 110 U 163 ½ – 110

Here are a few online wagering trends that might help us find a good online bet in this game.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are 1 and 4 against the spread in their last 5 games on the road.
The West Virginia Mountaineers are 1 and 5 against the spread in their last 6 games overall.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are 12 and 2 against the spread in their last 14 non-conference games.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are 9 and 2 against the spread in their last 11 games overall.

The trends point to the Ohio State Buckeyes just playing a fantastic game in this and taking it to the West Virginia Mountaineers. But I’m not sold on the Buckeyes’ talent this season.

I do believe that the Mountaineers will be very tough in this game because of coach Huggins and the fact that West Virginia has already played Kentucky and Davidson. Those were both losses, but West Virginia didn’t lose by much.

Alex Ruoff, West Virginia’s top scorer, is averaging 17 points a game. He had 38 in their last game. That means that this is going to be Ohio States’ sternest test to date.

Because of the trends, I don’t see the online sportsbook odds makers making Ohio State less than a 4 ½ point favorite against the spread.

West Virginia vs. Ohio St. Prediction:

If that’s what the line ends up, then I have to take West Virginia and the points in this one.
