One of these teams will have their unbeaten streak snapped as the No. 4 Purdue Boilermakers host the No.6 Mountaineers of West Virginia on New Years Day.

No NCAA Division I team has made it through an entire season undefeated since Indiana finished off its 1976 championship season with a 32-0 mark.

The two teams have played each other just one time in the last three decades with the Boilermakers sliding by the Mountaineers, 75-72 in overtime on March 25, 1981.

The Boilermakers opened their 2009 Big Ten schedule with a commanding 67-56 win over Iowa on Tuesday night at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

After a sluggish start, junior guard E’Twaun Moore led his team to victory, scoring 21 points –15 in the second half.

Robbie Hummel added 16 points and eight rebounds in the win. This is the second time in school history Purdue has opened the season with 12 straight wins. The Boilermakers’ tenacious defense limited Iowa’s offense in the second half with their old-fashioned man-to-man coverage and solid ball handling fundamentals.

Meanwhile, West Virginia preserved their unbeaten streak Tuesday night, with a miraculous 63-62 finish over Marquette on a Da’Sean Butler turnaround bucket with two seconds left. Butler finished with 17 points while Devin Ebanks led the way with 19 points in the win.

Kevin Jones — the only Mountaineer player to score in double digits in every game, contributed 18 points. West Virginia’s 11-0 start is the best start since Jerry West led the 1957-58 Mountaineers to a 14-0 start.

Purdue and West Virginia are two of just six Division I teams that remain undefeated and this should be an exciting game to start the new year as both teams will be playing hard to preserve their records. The Boilermakers defense will prove itself to be too much for the Mountaineers who will not have the luxury of a late comeback as they have done several times this season.

WVU will need to come on strong early and avoid fading away if they want a shot at taking away a road win against a team that is 5-0 at home.
