The Arizona Wildcats will met the Memphis Tigers under the bright lights of the national spotlight when they hit the hard court this Friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Derrick Williams and company can’t wait to hit the floor and put memories of their PAC-10 championship run in the past after they were stopped in their tracks by the Washington Huskies in an overtime thriller, a loss that really shook a team that had coasted for much of the year.
The Wildcats won 14 of 18 games in regular season play, with three of their four losses coming away from home. Williams was the driving force for an Arizona team that earned the top seed in the PAC-10, registering a team-high 19.1 points per game and 8.1 rebounds. Williams is a prolific scorer that brings the hustle that has helped him to reach his potential for the Wildcats, and he will need to once again be the team’s driving force as tournament play gets underway.
Arizona won’t have it easy against a Memphis team that finished off their year with four straight wins, including three in the postseason to clinch an automatic bid for earning the Conference USA title. The Tigers were dominant against lesser competition in conference play, and it will be interesting to see how that translates against some of the best teams in the country in the Madness. Freshman guard Will Barton led the team with 12.3 points per game and five rebounds during the regular season, but he’ll be pressure early and often in this game.
There is potential here for an upset with a confident Tigers’ team that has proved their resiliency over the course of the season, and six points is a lot to give an Arizona team that hasn’t really been challenged much to date in the PAC-10. The Wildcats may be caught early against an upstart Memphis team that is eager to prove that they belong, and although in the end Arizona should be able to advance, the six points is far too much to give in a tournament known for so many close finishes and notable finishes.
