Whats doing at  the top?

(best matchup featuring a top 5 team)

Saturday January 9, 1:30 PM
Purdue vs. Wisconsin
@Wisconsin

Last game for Purdue: 79-60 win over Minnesota (ATS win -8.5)
Last Game for Wisconsin: 54-47 loss at Michigan State (ATS loss +6)
Last Meeting: 64-63 victory by Purdue
Line: Wisconsin -2

The Big Ten may not get the love of the other major conferences but when their top teams tangle it is definitely worth checking out.  For Purdue, they are undefeated having proved their lofty ranking with a very impressive win over then unbeaten West Virginia on New Year’s day.  Meanwhile Wisconsin is doing it again.  Nobody is intimidated by them but they always compete hard and win games nobody thinks they should like spanking Duke earlier this year.  Can they spoil the Boilermakers perfect start.  We will see.

Of all the top teams I have seen this year Purdue has been the most impressive.  They have amazing balance, scoring both inside and out, good size, and a great defensive disruptor in Chris Kramer.  The trio of Hummel, Johnson and Moore have been fantastic making this team difficult to guard as anyone of them can be the leading scorer in a given contest.  Having escaped the non-conference schedule unbeaten they could really be in for a special season.  With the exception of a visit to Michigan State they should be favoured in all their remaining games.

Wisconsin enters the contest with a better than expected 12-3 record but off a loss to Michigan State.  They are getting amazing production from forward Jon Leuer who has almost doubled his scoring and rebounding from last season.  Also, don’t overlook Trevon Hughes who continues to improve and is showing the impact a senior can have as an on-court leader.  Hughes will be challenged by Kramer and Leuer will have all he can handle with JaJuan Johnson.  Wisconsin’s challenge will be matching the talent of the Boilermakers but with their system and their experience and the fact that they are at home this game will do down to the wire.

Score Prediction: Purdue – 71 vs. Wisconsin  – 67

Pick: I respect the Badgers but I don’t know how you can make them the favourite against an undefeated Purdue to team.  This one will be close as Wisconsin is good at dictating pace in their own gym but in the end the Trio of Moore, Hummel and Johnson will be too much.  You have to play Purdue with the points and if you want a kicker go for the SU victory.

Mid-Major Rager

Saturday January 9, 4:00 PM
UNLV vs New Mexico
@New Mexico

Last Game for UNLV: 77-73 loss at BYU (ATS win +7.5)
Last Game for New Mexico: 74-64 loss at San Diego State (ATS loss -4)
Line: New Mexicos -5.5
Matchup history: New Mexico is 7-3 ATS in last ten (4-6 SU. Last game is series was a 73-69 OT win for NM

New Mexico is one of the nice surprise teams so far.  They are sitting at 14-2 but are coming off a road loss to kickoff MWC play.  UNLV roared out of the gate and was in the rankings a few weeks ago but back to back losses have knocked them down a peg and they are going to have to play well in conference if they want an at large bid.  When the Lobos and the Rebels tussle it is usually a close game, 4 of the last 6 have been decided by 4 points or less including 2 that went into overtime.  Both teams are trying to establish themselves as number 2 in conference after BYU and this game will count for a lot.

There is no shame losing at BYU.  The Rebels were in the game and proved they should be among the top teams in the conference.  Trevon Willis has a great game scoring 24 but no other player cracked double digits and on nights when he is off his game this team can really struggle. They need Kentucky transfer Derrick Jasper to step up.  He was pretty highly touted as a recruit but is averaging only 7.5 points per game and was held to 4, 3, and 0 points in their losses.  Winning this game on the road will not be easy but with better balance the Rebels have a chance.

New Mexico’s 14-2 record in legit.  They have beaten a bunch of teams who will likely make the tourney headlined by a victory over Cal.  The opposite of UNLV they are getting great balance with 4 players in double figures scoring and 3 averaging more than 5 boards a game.  Now that they are playing more familiar conference opponents it will be interesting to see how the Lobos continue to play. Sports Betting at the Sportsbook They shot very poorly at San Diego State and lost by ten.  They need to bounce back to put some fear into the rest of the MWC who I am sure have noticed this team is vastly improved.

Score Prediction: New Mexico – 77 vs. UNLV – 70

Pick: New Mexico is a solid ML play at home but the spread seems about right.  It is still early in the season making it tough to gauge just how good the Lobo’s are.  I want to check these guys out some more so I will take a pass.

Can’t Ignore

Saturday January 9, 12:00PM
Connecticut vs. Georgetown
@Georgetown

Last game for Connecticut: 71-63 victory over Seton Hall (ATS win -6.5)
Last game for Georgetown: 62-59 loss at Marquette (ATS loss +1.5)
Line: Georgetown -4.5

Matchup History: Georgetown has won the last three (2-1 ATS)

UConn is not nearly as fearsome as they have been the last couple of years with Hasheem Thabeet in the middle but they are still firmly a top 25 team with plenty of talent to challenge anyone in the Big East.  Georgetown has rebounded nicely from last year’s disappointments they are coming off a tough road loss and should be happy to be home.  The Hoyas and Huskies tip off a very solid weekend switching from pigskin to roundball.

Despite the loss of Thabeet the Huskies still have plenty of size to push around any opponent.  They are going to need all of it to stifle Greg Monroe, a smooth big for the Hoyas.  Stanley Robinson made the right decision to stay in school, his numbers are way up.  So are the numbers for the sweet shooting Jerome Dyson, if he had been healthy at the end of the last year who knows how far the Huskies might have gone.  The Huskies are a very complete team but do not have the depth they have had in the past.  When the starters are on the floor they can hang with anybody.

Georgetown is playing much better than last year but their two losses are puzzling.  No shame in losing at Marquette but losing at home to Old Dominion is a head scratcher.  Greg Monroe is sensational but he needs to assert himself with more consistency.  He should be at 20/10 not 14/9 guy.  The rest of the cast is much improved especially Austin Freeman whose numbers sagged after a promising freshman season.  Chris Wright will need to protect the rock better to handle the pressure that UConn will bring.  If he can neutralize Kemba Walker that will be a huge plus for the Hoyas.

Score Prediction: Connecticut – 71 vs. Georgetown – 70

Pick: Loving the Huskies to pull the upset on the road.  UConn’s bigs can bang with Monroe and challenge him to respond.  I expect him to play well but it won’t be easy and he will have to watch his fouls.  Hoyas will have a chance at the buzzer but will fall just short.  UConn is a great ATS play here and the spread might rise as tip approaches.
